Florida International vs Florida Gulf Coast prediction: Tijan Saine Jr. brings FIU's rebuilt offense at FGCU's porous perimeter
Two Florida programs rebuilt almost from scratch, and FGCU's opener showed a three-point defense FIU's new star guard can attack.

Two programs starting over
Nobody on FIU's roster played for the Panthers last season. Returning minutes: 0.0%. First-year coach Joey Cantens rebuilt the team through the portal and his own network. Mason Blazer played for him at Florida SouthWestern, and Seydina N'Diaye followed him from Daytona State. That makes last season's 15-17 FIU team a poor guide to this one.
FGCU kept more, but not much. Players on Pat Chambers' roster account for 19.4% of last season's minutes. Four of the five Eagles who started against UCF last December are gone.
The first look at each group came on Nov. 2, and the two tests could hardly have differed more. FIU crushed New College 101-58, but New College isn't a Division I opponent, so FIU's early efficiency numbers say little. FGCU went to UCF, a team rated 58th in adjusted net efficiency, and lost 96-95 in overtime. Chase Konieczny's late layup forced the extra period.
Saine against an open perimeter
Tijan Saine Jr. is the reason to watch FIU. He earned First Team All-Big Sky honors at Weber State, where he averaged 17.5 points last season. In his FIU debut he scored 24 points on 6-of-11 shooting from three in 29 minutes.
FGCU's defense gave him reason to keep shooting. UCF made 50.0% of its threes against the Eagles, which ranks 335th of 348. FGCU also forced turnovers on just 11.5% of UCF possessions (324th), so opponents got plenty of clean looks. Last season's FGCU defense ranked 312th in raw efficiency, so the opener wasn't a one-off.
FGCU's answer is to outscore people. Bryson Lucas posted 25 points and 10 rebounds in his Eagles debut, and Justin Houser, a 7-footer who barely played at Penn State, added 20. FGCU also has a little more size, averaging 77.1 inches weighted by minutes against FIU's 76.0.
Tempo under a new coach
FIU played 84 possessions against New College, ninth-fastest in the country so far. Some of that comes from a blowout against a weaker team. It is still a sign that Cantens wants to run.
FGCU lives at the other end. The Eagles played 68.4 possessions at UCF, and even with overtime that ranked 261st. Last season's FGCU team was similarly slow.
Whoever sets the tempo shapes the total. FIU wants a fast game of turnovers and runouts. FGCU wants to shoot threes in the half court. The Eagles took 51.6% of their shots from deep in the opener.
Health, home floor and history
FIU said Ramone Seals, a Kennesaw State transfer, was likely to miss the opener with an injury. He didn't appear in the box score. There has been no update since Oct. 31, so his status for this game is unknown.
FGCU guard BB Washington came back from heart surgery against UCF, playing his first game in about 18 months. He scored seven points in 16 minutes.
Both teams come in with 11 days of rest, and FGCU gets its first home game at Alico Arena. The series has been tight. FGCU won by three in 2023 and 60-59 in 2024, and FIU won 89-83 last December. Almost none of the players from those games are still on either roster.
