Quick take
  • Expect a close, possession-for-possession game between two heavily rebuilt rosters, with Denver leaning on Carson Johnson's shot-making to steal a road win.
  • Johnson against a new UC Riverside backcourt led by Saint Mary's transfer Tony Duckett, who scored 21 in his debut.
  • UC Riverside's spread has slid from -3.0 to -1.75, and Denver covered as a 25.25-point underdog at Wisconsin.

Two openers, two different tests

Denver's first night of the season came at Wisconsin, a team that ranks 25th in adjusted net efficiency. The Pioneers lost 75-68 but covered comfortably as a 25.25-point underdog, and they did it while trailing by 14 at the break.

UC Riverside's opener was a 110-47 rout of La Verne. That one game is the entire basis for the Highlanders' gaudy season rankings, so treat them as noise. The useful question is what each new roster looks like against a Division I opponent, and only Denver has answered it.

Johnson and the questions around him

Carson Johnson is the reason Denver stayed close in Madison. He scored 27 and took nearly a third of the team's possessions, and he is the one proven piece on a roster that returns just 27.0% of last season's minutes. Last season he averaged 20.1 points and shot 41.4% from three, so the 2-of-7 night from deep at Wisconsin looks more like a slow start than a new normal.

The help is the issue. Denver lost Jeremiah Burke and Zane Nelson, two of last season's best shooters, and the newcomers did not fill that gap in the opener. The Pioneers made 21.1% of their threes as a team, and Samford transfer Kam Martin scored 9 on 30% shooting. One thing did travel: Denver made 85.7% of its free throws, 13th nationally, which matters in a game this tight.

Denver's defense is the old worry

Last season Denver could score with anyone and stop almost no one. The Pioneers allowed 120.4 points per 100 possessions, 359th of 365, and ranked 358th in forced turnover rate, the share of opponent possessions ending in a turnover. Opponents made 36.9% of their threes, 352nd nationally.

Wisconsin scored only 75, so the new group may be sturdier. But Denver also turned it over on 22.9% of its possessions in the opener, 312th nationally, a sharp break from a team that ranked 28th in ball security last season. If that carries over against an aggressive Riverside defense, the road team gives away the possessions it needs.

A Riverside roster built from scratch

UC Riverside went 10-22 last season and ranked 321st in offensive efficiency, but those numbers describe a different team. The Highlanders return only 17.5% of last season's minutes, and their two leading scorers, Andrew Henderson and Marqui Worthy Jr., are gone.

Gus Argenal's second roster is a transfer collection. Tony Duckett, who played 6.6 minutes a game at Saint Mary's last season, scored 21 on 3-of-4 shooting from three in his debut. Tyus Parrish-Tillman added 15 points and 9 rebounds, and Cal Baptist transfer Devon Malcolm chipped in 13 off the bench. One flaw stood out even in a blowout: Riverside made 43.3% of its free throws, 360th nationally.

Where the number sits

UC Riverside opened at -3.0 in our feed and now sits at -1.75, with the move coming toward Denver. The total has barely budged, at 154.5. The Highlanders played at 77 possessions in their opener and Denver at 70, so tempo control is worth watching early.

- Whether Johnson gets help from the transfers or has to carry a 30% usage load again. Denver's turnovers against a Riverside defense that forced turnovers on 29.9% of possessions in its opener. - Free throws late: Denver's shooting from the line against Riverside's opening-night struggles.
