Central Connecticut vs Sacred Heart prediction: Central Connecticut and Sacred Heart restart an in-state series with new casts
Both programs lost their stars, so Thursday's game in Fairfield is a first real look at two rebuilt rotations, one tested by Temple and one not tested at all.
- Sacred Heart's deeper opening-night output and home floor face a Central Connecticut team that started 16-36 at Temple before steadying.
- Ashton Reynolds, CCSU's only efficient scorer at Temple, against a Sacred Heart guard group led by Jojo Wallace's 21 points off the bench.
- No line posted yet; CCSU covered as a 14.5-point underdog at Temple, and that game finished under 145.
Two rosters built from scratch
The last time these teams met, Central Connecticut won 108-106 in overtime. Almost nobody who decided that night is back. Sacred Heart returns just 16.0% of last season's minutes, and CCSU returns 35.3%, so last season's team numbers are a weak guide for either side.
The departures are severe. CCSU lost Darin Smith Jr., who averaged 20.7 points and is now at Rutgers, plus point guard Jay Rodgers to Penn State, big man Max Frazier to Hampton and shooter Melo Sanchez to South Dakota. Sacred Heart lost Nyle Ralph-Beyer to VCU, along with fellow starters Dashon Gittens, Yann Farell and Mekhi Conner.
The records diverged last season, CCSU at 18-12 and Sacred Heart at 14-19, yet last season's final adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had the two nearly level, 299th and 302nd nationally in net efficiency. With rosters this new, the preseason picture still matters: CCSU was picked third in the NEC, and Sacred Heart now plays in the Metro Atlantic.
What Temple revealed about CCSU
Central Connecticut's opener was a tale of two halves. The Blue Devils trailed 16-36 at the break at Temple, then played the hosts close the rest of the way in a 68-56 loss. Raphel Laurent's corner three cut the lead to 11 with 1:27 left.
The problems were inside and at the line. CCSU made 33.3% of its twos, which ranks 289th of 303 teams with a game played, and 46.2% of its free throws. Last season's team shot 76.9% at the line, but most of those shooters have left.
Ashton Reynolds was the bright spot, scoring 18 points and hitting 4 of 8 threes off the bench. Returning starter James Jones played 34 minutes and scored 1 point, though he pulled down 7 rebounds. This is the second of four straight road games to open CCSU's season.
Reading a 67-point blowout
Sacred Heart's 111-44 win over Coast Guard says little about its ceiling. Coast Guard carries no Division I rating, and the Pioneers led 58-15 at halftime, so every efficiency and pace figure from that night is inflated. The useful signal is who got the ball.
Jojo Wallace scored 21 points in 18 minutes off the bench and carried the heaviest usage on the team. DJ Brown filled the defensive side of the box score with 6 steals and 5 blocks. Samson Reilly, a transfer from Quinnipiac who shot 48.1% from three there last season, added 10 points. Returner Jaden Slaughter ran the offense with 9 rebounds and 6 assists.
The Pioneers spread minutes widely, with no player above 24. That depth looks real, but Thursday is the first time it faces a Division I opponent.
A series that stays tight
This is an in-state game with a history of close finishes. Beyond last season's overtime thriller, CCSU won 68-67 in this building in February 2024. Both teams come in on 10 days of rest, so neither side has a scheduling edge.
No spread or total has posted. The one market data point belongs to CCSU, which covered against a Temple team rated 165th in adjusted net efficiency, while that game stayed under the total. Sacred Heart has yet to play a game with a line.
Key players

- James Jones (Central Connecticut): Played 34 minutes in the opener with 7 rebounds but just 1 point.
- Jojo Wallace (Sacred Heart): Scored 21 points in 18 minutes against Coast Guard with a 33.3% usage rate.

Numbers that matter
| Sacred Heart returning minutes | 16.0% | Almost the entire rotation is new, so last season's numbers say little about this team. |
|---|---|---|
| CCSU first half at Temple | 16-36 | A slow start buried the Blue Devils before they competed evenly late. |
| CCSU free throw % | 46.2% | A poor night at the line from a roster that lost most of last season's 76.9% shooters. |
| Last meeting | 108-106 | CCSU won in overtime last November, the latest in a run of close games in this series. |
