Cal State Bakersfield vs Western Illinois prediction: Western Illinois must stop fouling as rebuilt Cal State Bakersfield visits
Two programs that kept almost nobody from last season meet in Macomb, and the Leathernecks' opener showed a home team that sent its opponent to the line far too often.
- A rebuilt Western Illinois, 10 days removed from a lopsided opener, hosts a Bakersfield roster that has yet to play together.
- Daivion Traylor, the 6-foot-9 transfer who used 32.5% of possessions in his debut, against a Roadrunners frontcourt built from transfers.
- No line is posted yet. Western Illinois closed as an 18.5-point underdog at Valparaiso and failed to cover.
A foul problem in Macomb
Western Illinois opened its season by handing Valparaiso the free-throw line. The Leathernecks lost 58-80 on Nov. 2, and the opponent's free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) reached 86.0%, which ranks 301st of 303 teams that have played.
The game was decided early. Western Illinois trailed 19-38 at halftime against a Valparaiso team ranked 163rd in adjusted net efficiency, a middle-of-the-pack opponent rather than a power. The perimeter defense held up, with Valparaiso shooting 25.0% from three. The damage came inside and at the stripe.
That matters against a Cal State Bakersfield program that lived at the line last season. The Roadrunners' free throw rate of 42.5% ranked 19th nationally in 2025-26. Whether this new roster plays the same way is an open question, but a Western Illinois team that keeps fouling at that clip gives any opponent an easy path to points.
Almost nobody is back
Both rosters were rebuilt, and that makes last season a weak guide. Bakersfield returns just 6.1% of last season's minutes. Western Illinois returns 16.8%, and coach Chad Boudreau starts his fourth season in Macomb with only two players back from last year's team.
Last season's final adjusted ratings had Bakersfield 326th and Western Illinois 364th of 365 in net efficiency, points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents. Treat those as background, not a forecast.
For Bakersfield, the returning thread is guard Jaden Alexander, who shot 82.9% at the line last season in a reserve role. Guard Bryce Cofield arrives from Cal State Fullerton after averaging 10.1 points there, though he made just 15.8% of his threes. Forward Chudi Dioramma, from Arkansas State, posted a 114.5 offensive rating last season on low usage, the profile of an efficient finisher. Ronald Jessamy, who averaged 1.7 blocks last season, is now at Texas State.
Traylor anchors the new Leathernecks
Western Illinois has one game of evidence on its new core. Daivion Traylor, a 6-foot-9 senior transfer from Southeastern University, led the team with 14 points in the opener and carried the offense with a usage rate of 32.5%.
The bright spot came off the bench. Makai Kvamme, one of the two returners, scored 13 points on 85.7% shooting, a sharp jump for a guard who averaged 5.0 points last season. Jack Riley added 11 points in 36 minutes.
The backcourt is the worry. Hunter Vaughn started, handed out five assists and went 0-for-5 from three. Western Illinois will have 10 days of rest before this game to sort out who handles the ball.
Pace, size and the market
Bakersfield pushed the tempo last season, averaging 72.3 possessions per 40 minutes, 15th in the country. Western Illinois played at 69 possessions in its opener. Bakersfield also brings more size, with a minutes-weighted average height of 78.9 inches to Western Illinois's 76.7.
No spread or total has been posted. The one market signal comes from the Leathernecks' opener, where they closed as 18.5-point underdogs, lost by more, and the game stayed under a 139.5 total. Bakersfield won the only recent meeting, 74-58 at home last November, though few players from either side remain.

Numbers that matter
| WIU opponent free throw rate | 86.0% | Valparaiso lived at the line in the opener, a rate that ranks 301st of 303. |
|---|---|---|
| WIU opener first half | 19-38 | Western Illinois was out of the game by halftime at Valparaiso. |
| CSUB returning minutes | 6.1% | Almost none of last season's Bakersfield rotation is back, so its old numbers say little. |
| CSUB free throw rate, last season | 42.5% | Ranked 19th nationally in 2025-26, a style that would punish Western Illinois's fouling if it carries over. |
| WIU closing spread vs. Valparaiso | 18.5 | The Leathernecks were 18.5-point underdogs and did not cover. |
