Bryant vs Rutgers prediction: Bryant's three-point barrage tests Brandin Knight's rebuilt Rutgers

With Steve Pikiell away for cancer treatment, a transfer-heavy Rutgers opens against a fast, high-volume Bryant team that is still searching for its shooting touch.

Quick take
  • Rutgers' scoring transfers should control the half court while Bryant's fast pace and stream of threes decide whether the margin stays close.
  • Bryant's perimeter volume against a Rutgers perimeter defense that ranked 302nd in opponent three-point percentage last season.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. Bryant covered as a 4.75-point underdog against Siena, and that game stayed under.

Knight takes the controls

Rutgers starts its season with a rebuilt roster and an empty chair. Steve Pikiell stepped away in September to undergo cancer treatment, and associate head coach Brandin Knight is the acting head coach. As of late October, Pikiell was going through intensive chemotherapy. Athletic director Keli Zinn has said there is no set timeline for his return.

Knight inherits nine newcomers on a 16-man roster. The headliner is Darin Smith Jr., who averaged 20.7 points at Central Connecticut last season. Rasheed Jones arrives from Coastal Carolina after making 36.6% of his threes. They join Tariq Francis, who averaged 17.0 points last season, the most of any returner, and shot 91.1% at the line. Kansas State transfer Dorin Buca was listed as questionable with a knee issue in an undated report, and no newer update has appeared.

Bryant lets it fly

In Jamion Christian's second season, Bryant wants threes and plenty of them. In its opener against Siena, 53.8% of its shots came from beyond the arc, the 34th-highest rate in the country. The makes have lagged. The Bulldogs hit 28.6% that night. Last season they made 30.4%, which ranked 340th nationally.

That puts Rutgers' perimeter defense at the center of this game. Opponents shot 35.6% from three against the Scarlet Knights last season, 302nd nationally. With this many new faces, that number may not carry over. If it does, Bryant's volume gives it a path to stay close.

Keegan Harvey is the shooter Bryant trusts most. The preseason all-conference forward had 20 points and 12 rebounds to beat Siena. He also made 40% of his threes last season.

New cast, old habits

Bryant returns only 26.7% of last season's minutes. That makes its 9-22 record from 2025-26 a weak guide to this team. Still, ball security is worth watching. Last season's Bulldogs turned the ball over on 20.1% of their possessions, 348th nationally. Rutgers' turnover rate was 15.0%.

The Scarlet Knights' soft spot last season was the defensive glass. They collected just 67.2% of opponents' misses, which ranked 305th. Bryant grabbed 76.6% of Siena's misses in its opener. It also plays a taller lineup than Rutgers when height is weighted by minutes, so second chances could keep the Bulldogs in this game when their threes don't fall.

Pace and the price

Bryant played at 81 possessions per 40 minutes against Siena, the 27th-fastest pace in the country. That is a sharp break from the slow-paced team Christian coached last season. If the Bulldogs push the tempo in Piscataway, the game will have more possessions, and Rutgers' deeper scoring roster gets more chances to build a lead.

No spread or total has been posted. Bryant covered as a 4.75-point underdog against Siena, and that game finished under its total. Last season's final adjusted net efficiency ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Rutgers 139th and Bryant 352nd. The one recent meeting, in 2023, went to Rutgers by nine at home.
