App State vs Charlotte prediction: Keyshuan Tillery's hot start runs into App State's slow-down grind

Charlotte's new scorer made seven threes in his debut, and App State would like to hold Friday to as few possessions and as many second shots as it can.

Quick take
  • Expect a slow half-court game in Charlotte's first regular-season home game under Wes Miller, decided by ball security and the offensive glass.
  • Keyshuan Tillery against App State's perimeter defense: he went 7-of-10 from three at Indiana State and used 37.3% of possessions.
  • No spread or total has posted yet. Both teams went under in their openers, App State's against a closing total of 133.0.

Two new rosters, one old grudge

App State won the last meeting in Boone a year ago, and almost nobody who decided that game will matter Friday at 7 p.m. in Halton Arena. Charlotte returns just 9.0% of last season's minutes under first-year coach Wes Miller, who brought Keyshuan Tillery with him from Cincinnati. App State, in Dustin Kerns' eighth season, returns 23.1% and rebuilt around nine scholarship newcomers with a focus on shooting.

That makes last season's team numbers a weak guide for both sides. The real evidence is one game each, both wins over similar opponents: Charlotte rallied from a halftime deficit to win 78-70 at Indiana State, its sixth straight season-opening win, and App State beat Merrimack 63-49 on a neutral floor in Rock Hill. Both teams have had 11 days to prepare.

Tillery's shooting sets the tone

Tillery came off the bench at Cincinnati last season and averaged 3.8 points. In his Charlotte debut he scored a career-high 29 and took over the offense, using 37.3% of the 49ers' possessions while he was on the floor. Charlotte made 48.0% of its threes as a team, 24th in Division I after opening week.

That pace of shooting will cool. The question is whether App State lets it. Merrimack shot an effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times) of just 39.8% against the Mountaineers. Dorian Finister, who averaged 14.9 points at Louisiana last season, is the second option; he posted 11 points and 10 rebounds against the Sycamores.

A game played at a crawl

App State ran 57 possessions against Merrimack, 347th of 349 teams. Charlotte is slow too, at 66 possessions in its opener. Neither team will push this game into the open floor.

Within those few trips, App State's new roster fired away: 60.0% of its shots were threes, 10th-most in the country, and it made only 26.7% of them. It won by building a 43-21 halftime lead and grinding out the rest. Jaylen Colon and Ben Kopetzki combined for 21 three-point attempts, so the volume will be there again. The makes are the variable.

Possessions given away, possessions won back

Both teams were sloppy in their openers. App State turned the ball over on 24.6% of its possessions, 303rd nationally, and Charlotte's 24.2% was nearly as bad. Charlotte rarely takes the ball away, though, so App State's giveaways may depend more on its own guards than on pressure.

The glass is App State's best path to extra shots. The Mountaineers rebounded 48.5% of their own misses, 35th nationally, and backup center Rrezon Elezaj grabbed seven boards in 19 minutes. Charlotte cleaned up 77.8% of opponents' misses at Indiana State and has the size edge, with a minutes-weighted average height of 78.4 inches. App State hasn't said whether KJ Vasser, a junior college transfer who missed last season with an injury, is available; that was the latest as of Oct. 29.
