Utah Jazz vs Memphis Grizzlies prediction: Jaren Jackson Jr. comes home to Memphis as Utah's emergency center

With three Jazz bigs out and Isaiah Stewart doubtful, the former Grizzlies anchor may decide an opener between two rebuilt teams that couldn't guard anyone last season.

Quick take
  • Expect a fast, high-scoring opener between two remade rosters whose defenses ranked near the bottom last season.
  • Jaren Jackson Jr. at center against his old team, with foul trouble and a thin Utah frontcourt behind him.
  • Memphis is a 1-point favorite, down from 1.25, with the total at 240.5; Utah's games went over 40 times in 66 last season.

A homecoming with extra weight

Jaren Jackson Jr. spent eight seasons in Memphis before the February trade that sent him to Utah. His first game back at FedExForum is also the season opener for both teams, and the Jazz need more from him than nostalgia.

Utah's frontcourt is thin. Jusuf Nurkić (foot), Tony Bradley (quad), Blake Hinson (hamstring) and Trey Alexander (knee) are all out, which leaves Jackson likely to log minutes at center alongside Jaxson Hayes and Mo Bamba. Jackson averaged 19.4 points and 1.4 blocks in 48 games for Memphis last season, and he gives Utah what it badly lacked: the Jazz ranked 30th of 30 in block rate last season and let opponents shoot 59.4% on twos, also worst in the league.

The catch is fouls. Jackson has been in foul trouble through the preseason, and every whistle pushes Utah deeper into a bench that has little size left. Hayes shot 75.6% from the field for the Lakers last season, almost all of it around the rim, but he isn't a 30-minute answer. Kyle Filipowski is off the injury report after back surgery, though he didn't play in the preseason and his minutes are unclear.

Memphis starts over

These are not last season's Grizzlies. Ja Morant is in Portland, Jackson is in Utah, and only 52.6% of last season's Memphis minutes return. Team numbers from 2025-26 describe a club that no longer exists, so the newcomers matter more.

Jerami Grant headlines that group after averaging 18.6 points for Portland last season, and he is off the injury report after resting late in the preseason. Rookie Cameron Boozer arrives as the other major addition. Cam Spencer is the returner to watch from deep: he shot 44.9% on threes last season, and Utah's defense allowed the highest share of opponent three-point attempts in the league (45.1%, 1st of 30).

Isaiah Stewart is doubtful with a left ankle sprain from an Oct. 5 preseason game. If he sits, Zach Edey is expected to start at center with Quinten Post behind him. Edey's own health is the bigger season-long question, but tonight a healthy Edey offers the size Utah can't match once Jackson sits.

Two defenses, one big total

Both teams played fast and defended poorly last season. Utah ranked 2nd in pace at 105.7 possessions per game, Memphis 7th. The Jazz gave up 126.0 points per game, 30th of 30.

The market has priced that in with a 240.5 total, unchanged since our feed first saw the game. The over hit often for both last season: 40-26 in Utah games and 38-27 in Memphis games. Last season's four meetings split evenly, and the scores ran high, including 130-126 and 137-128 before Utah's 147-101 rout in April.

The counterweight is newness. Opening-night rotations are unsettled, Utah is short on bodies, and a rookie point guard in Darryn Peterson will run the Jazz offense after shooting poorly in the preseason finale at Phoenix.

A short spread, drifting to Utah

Memphis is favored by 1 at home, down from -1.25 when our feed first logged the line, with the movement toward Utah. The moneylines sit at -117 for Memphis and -103 for the Jazz.

That near-even price reflects expectations that point in opposite directions. League GMs and experts project Utah among the three most improved teams, while one preview has Memphis finishing in the West's bottom three. Utah also brings back 64.8% of last season's minutes, more continuity than Memphis, led by Keyonte George, who averaged 23.6 points last season.

  • Jackson's fouls: early whistles would expose Utah's depleted frontcourt.
  • Stewart's status: doubtful, with Edey in line to start.
  • Peterson's debut: the No. 2 pick runs the offense against a revamped backcourt.
