Miami Heat vs Charlotte Hornets prediction: Hornets' three-point barrage tests a Heat defense still in freefall
Both teams play the second night of a back-to-back after blowout losses, and Kon Knueppel's hamstring may decide how loud Charlotte's shooting gets.
| Spread | Miami Heat -4.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 227.5 |
- Expect Miami to lean on Giannis Antetokounmpo inside while Charlotte fires away from deep at a Heat defense allowing 44.3% on threes.
- Charlotte's shooters, Knueppel if cleared, against Miami's closeouts: the Hornets lead the league in 3-point attempt rate but are making 26.3%.
- Miami is a 3.5-point road favorite with a 230.5 total, unchanged Saturday; Charlotte has gone under in both games this season.
Charlotte shoots, Miami allows
Charlotte knows what kind of team it wants to be, even if the shots haven't caught up yet. The Hornets take 55.0% of their field goal attempts from three, the highest share in the league, and make just 26.3% of them, 25th of 30. Friday's 128-81 home loss to Atlanta, the Hawks' largest blowout in franchise history, showed what that looks like when nothing falls.
Saturday offers the friendliest target imaginable. Miami's opponents have shot 44.3% from three, last in the league. The Heat also rank 30th in opponent effective field goal percentage, a shooting measure that counts threes 1.5 times.
The swing piece is Kon Knueppel, who made 42.5% of his threes last season. He has missed both games with a hamstring strain and was listed as day-to-day on Saturday's report, the same tag he carried before sitting Friday. Coby White (left calf strain) and Grant Williams (hamstring) carry that listing too. Kylan Boswell, recovering from right knee surgery, was earlier listed as out with an early-November target, then showed up as day-to-day Saturday, so his status is unsettled.
Giannis carries a sinking ship
Miami's 0-2 start isn't on Giannis Antetokounmpo. He scored 35 in the opener against Minnesota and 36 against Detroit on Friday, and the Heat lost both comfortably; they never led Friday. He arrived from Milwaukee, where he averaged 27.6 points on 62.4% shooting last season, in a trade that sent Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware and Jaime Jaquez Jr. the other way.
The trouble is everything around him. Bam Adebayo sat with foul trouble Friday, and Antetokounmpo went to the bench late in the second quarter with his third foul. Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr. were brought in to space the floor, yet Miami is shooting 27.4% from three, 20th in the league. Charlotte's frontcourt of Naz Reid and Moussa Diabate has to keep Antetokounmpo out of the paint.
Possessions on the glass
Charlotte's best route to extra shots runs through the offensive boards. The Hornets have grabbed 35.1% of their own misses, 4th in the league, and Miami's defensive rebounding ranks 23rd. Every second chance is another three at a defense that hasn't stopped them.
The giveback is ball security. Charlotte turns it over on 23.2% of possessions, worst in the league, and loose passes on tired legs hand the ball to a Miami team that plays fast: the Heat rank 6th in pace, Charlotte 21st. Whoever wins this trade likely decides the scoring margin.
Tired legs, familiar foe
Neither team arrives fresh. Both played at home Friday, both were blown out, and both heard it from their crowds; Charlotte's sellout booed at halftime. Now they meet on the second night of a back-to-back.
There is history here. Miami won last season's series 3-1, but Charlotte took the last regular-season meeting 136-106 on March 17 in this building and then beat Miami in the play-in. Those games are a loose guide, though: Charlotte traded LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges, and Miami returns 61.5% of last season's minutes.
Where the line sits
Miami is a 3.5-point favorite on the road with the total at 230.5, and neither number has moved since Saturday morning. The market is backing a winless team that is also 0-2 against the spread, trusting Antetokounmpo over Charlotte's thin, banged-up backcourt.
The total is a bet on which trend breaks. Charlotte has gone under in both games and finished under in 41 of 65 games with a line last season. Miami's games went over in 37 of 65 last season, and its defense has done little to suggest a change. If the Hornets' threes start falling against Miami's porous perimeter, 230.5 looks reachable; if they keep missing, Charlotte's under habit holds.
