Houston Rockets vs Atlanta Hawks prediction: Hawks' turnover-hunting defense faces Houston in Atlanta's home opener
Atlanta's ball-hawking start runs into a Rockets team that swept last season's series and wins possessions on the glass, with both sides on short rest.
| Spread | Atlanta Hawks -1 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 227.5 |
- Expect Atlanta to push the pace and hunt steals while Houston slows it down, makes its threes and tries to win the boards.
- Watch Atlanta's forced turnovers against Houston's ball handling, without Reed Sheppard if his knee keeps him out again.
- Atlanta is a 1.5-point favorite and the total is 230.0, both unchanged; Houston's games went under 39 times in 68 lined games last season.
The possession battle decides it
Atlanta finally plays at home after a 2-0 road trip that ended with a 128-81 rout in Charlotte on Friday. Its first home guest is the team that owned the Hawks last season, and both clubs arrive on the second night of a back-to-back. They play again Monday in Houston, so tonight opens a two-game look at each other.
The Hawks' calling card so far is pressure. They force turnovers on 21.8% of opponent possessions, 3rd of 30, and took the ball away 14 times in the first half alone against Charlotte. Dyson Daniels sets the tone: he averaged 2.0 steals last season.
Houston's answer is the glass. The Rockets led the league in offensive rebound rate last season at 34.8%, the share of their own misses they recover. This season they are finishing defensive possessions, too, grabbing 78.2% of opponent misses (5th). Atlanta's defensive rebounding sits 19th at 70.5%. If the Hawks turn Houston over and the Rockets turn Atlanta's misses into extra shots, those two trades largely decide the night.
Threes allowed, twos conceded
Atlanta's defense invites threes and gets away with it. Opponents take 52.9% of their shots from deep, the highest share in the league, yet make only 26.4% of them (7th).
That test lands on a Houston team that rarely shoots from distance but hasn't missed much: its 3-point attempt rate ranks 24th while its 42.6% conversion ranks 1st. Kevin Durant is the weapon there, having hit 41.3% of his threes last season. Sheppard, who made 39.4% last season, would add another shooter if he plays.
The soft spot runs the other way. Houston opponents are making 63.0% of their twos, 27th in the league, and Atlanta scores 57.0 points per game in the paint (4th). Jalen Johnson attacking downhill is the Hawks' cleanest route to points.
Who's available on short rest
Sheppard sat out Friday's win in San Antonio with a left knee bruise, and his status for tonight had not been confirmed. Steven Adams was cleared for Friday's game after a calf issue, but Houston has said he won't play back-to-backs, which points to Clint Capela backing up Alperen Sengun.
Atlanta is without Mouhamed Gueye, who had surgery on a fractured left foot, and Henri Veesaar, out for the season with a torn ACL. The Hawks pulled their regulars in the fourth quarter Friday with tonight in mind, a small edge in fresh legs.
This Atlanta roster is also newer. It returns 70.6% of last season's minutes, against 84.1% for Houston, so the Rockets' track record says more about who they are now. Luguentz Dort and Aaron Wiggins arrived from Oklahoma City, and Wiggins carried the second unit early Friday.
Tempo, history and the line
The two teams want different games. Atlanta plays at 107.7 possessions per game (7th), while Houston sits 26th at 101.0, the same slot it held last season. Both start fast: the Hawks lead the league with 70.0 first-half points per game, and the Rockets rank 3rd at 65.5.
History leans Houston. The Rockets won both meetings last season, 104-86 in Atlanta and 117-95 at home, holding the Hawks under 100 each time.
The market treats it as close to even. Atlanta is favored by 1.5 with the total at 230.0, and neither number has moved since our feed first saw the game. Both teams are 2-0 against the spread. Houston went just 27-41 against the spread last season.
