Zach Reese vs Mickey Gall prediction: After 714 days and a medical scare, Mickey Gall returns at middleweight

Gall carries a four-fight skid, a new weight class and a shaky takedown defense into a fight with a long, wrestling-minded Zach Reese, who has problems of his own.

The moneyline
Zach Reese-450 (78.2% implied)
Mickey Gall+339 (21.8% implied)

Median of US sportsbooks; implied chances have the books' margin removed. Updated Oct 31, 6:01 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Reese's length and takedowns frame the fight; Gall needs a scramble or a choke before his 38% takedown defense becomes the story.
  • Watch Reese's level changes. Every shot gives Gall a chance to find a neck, or leaves him pinned under a bigger man.
  • Reese was first seen at -265 and now sits at -405, a 77.1% no-vig chance. Gall hasn't fought in 714 days.

A long road back

Mickey Gall hasn't fought in 714 days. He was supposed to return in late September against Sedriques Dumas, but he was pulled days before that bout after he failed to get medical clearance. The condition was never disclosed. He has since been cleared, and the UFC built this fight in the wake of that withdrawal.

He also comes back in a new division. Gall fought his whole career at welterweight, and this is his first middleweight bout. He weighed in at 185.5 and Reese at 185, so both made weight. Gall is 6-7 in the UFC and has lost four straight. His last win, a rear-naked choke of Jordan Williams, came in July 2021.

Where Gall's chances live

Gall has always been a submission specialist. Six of his seven pro wins came by submission, and he averages 1.58 submission attempts per 15 minutes in the UFC. The problem is getting there. He lands only 32% of his takedown attempts and stops just 38% of his opponents'.

Reese is happy to wrestle. He averages 2.8 takedowns per 15 minutes and completes 61% of his attempts. In his last win he went 3-for-3 on takedowns against Jackson McVey and finished with a rear-naked choke. Reese has no submission losses in the UFC, and his own armbar win on the Contender Series shows he is no stranger to the mat. Gall's best path is a scramble off one of Reese's shots, a front choke or a back take in transition, rather than a planned grappling exchange.

Two chins with dents

Neither man has been durable. Reese has three knockout losses in the UFC, the latest to Ryan Gandra in 1:15 at UFC 329. His strike defense makes opponents miss only 44% of the time. Gall also has three knockout losses, including a first-round stoppage against Ramiz Brahimaj in his last fight, and he absorbs 4.72 significant strikes per minute while landing 3.5.

Reese is the busier striker at 4.43 landed per minute, and at 6-foot-4 with a 77-inch reach he is bigger than Gall, who stands 6-foot-2 with a 74-inch reach. Gall is moving up to face that frame. Reese is also 4-4 with a no-contest in the UFC and is coming off two straight losses, so neither fighter arrives with much margin.

The market's verdict

The books have moved hard toward Reese. Our feed first saw him at -265. He now sits at -405, with Gall at +320, and seven books are quoting. That price implies a 77.1% chance for Reese once the margin is removed.

The move fits the packet. A fighter off a 714-day layoff and an undisclosed medical issue, moving up a weight class, with a 38% takedown defense, is facing a bigger man who wrestles. Gall's case rests almost entirely on his submission instincts in scrambles, and on Reese's own habit of getting hurt early.
