The fight lives on the mat

Luana Santos has made her recent fights look the same, and that is the point. Against Karol Rosa in June she landed just 2 of 10 takedown attempts, yet piled up 741 seconds of control and swept all three scorecards. Before that she held Melissa Croden down for 561 seconds. Her career takedown accuracy is only 38%, but she does not need efficiency. She keeps shooting until one lands, then stays on top.

That is a problem for Yana Santos, who stops 52% of takedown attempts. Half of Luana's shots getting through would be plenty. Luana is also a real finishing threat once she settles: she closed Tainara Lisboa with a keylock from mount at 4:59 of the second round and choked out Mariya Agapova in the first. Yana has never been submitted in the UFC, but she has rarely been asked to spend this much time on her back.

Yana's path runs through the clinch

Yana is the busier striker by a wide margin. She lands 4.41 significant strikes a minute to Luana's 2.53, and 39% of her landed strikes come in the clinch. Her wins tend to come less from range striking than from that close work, leaning on opponents and hammering the body.

The risk is obvious. The clinch is exactly where a grappler like Luana can hit a trip and end up on top. Yana believes her striking, physical strength and improved takedown defense will make the difference.

There is a template for beating Luana. In her only UFC loss, at flyweight against Casey O'Neill, she absorbed 83 significant strikes and could not make her wrestling stick. That fight shows what happens when her takedowns fail. Her baseline defense is solid, though: she absorbs 2.45 strikes a minute and makes opponents miss 64% of the time.

Ten years, two elbows, one long layoff

Yana is 36. Luana is 26. Yana returns 392 days after outpointing Macy Chiasson, a gap she ties to surgery on both elbows. She said surgeons removed roughly 40 fragments, and that she won her last three fights through pain she no longer feels. She also withdrew from an April bout against Norma Dumont for undisclosed reasons. Her camp now says there are no injury concerns.

Luana fought in June and chose a closed, individualized camp in Brazil. Both fighters weighed in, and no miss was reported for this bout. They also share an opponent: Rosa beat Yana by split decision in 2023, then lost every round on every card to Luana.

Stakes and the price

Both arrive on three-fight winning streaks. The latest rankings list Luana fourth and Yana sixth, and Luana is openly chasing a title shot in 2027. All seven of Yana's UFC wins came by decision, so a 15-minute fight is familiar ground for her. That only helps if the minutes are spent standing.
