Randy Brown vs Jacobe Smith prediction: Jacobe Smith brings unbeaten wrestling to Randy Brown on short notice

An Oklahoma State wrestler who has never had a full UFC camp gets his first real veteran test, and the question is whether Brown's length can hold him off long enough to matter.

The moneyline
Randy Brown+227.5 (29.3% implied)
Jacobe Smith-279 (70.7% implied)

Median of US sportsbooks; implied chances have the books' margin removed. Updated Oct 31, 6:01 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Smith hunts takedowns early; Brown needs his reach and distance boxing to drag an unbeaten, camp-less wrestler into deep water late.
  • Watch Smith's first takedown entries against Brown's 75% takedown defense, and the clinch, where a Bonfim knee stopped Brown last November.
  • Smith sits at -267.5, up from -255 when our feed first saw it; his UFC opponents were a combined 10-11.

A wrestler without a camp

Jacobe Smith keeps taking fights on the turnaround and keeps winning them early. He stepped in for the injured Carlos Leal with 11 or 12 days' notice (reports differ), less than a month after knocking out Bruce Whitehead at UFC 332. He has not had a full training camp for any of his four UFC fights, and he is 13-0 as a pro.

The former Oklahoma State wrestler lands 5.06 takedowns per 15 minutes and controls opponents for 45% of his fight time. Randy Brown stops 75% of takedown attempts across 22 UFC fights, a respectable number that has not always held against committed grapplers. Michael Graves submitted him early in his UFC run, and Kevin Holland nearly finished him with a choke in round two in April.

Smith's ground work is not just control. In his last two wins he took the fight down and finished with punches on the mat, against Josiah Harrell from side control and against Whitehead. Of his landed significant strikes, 36% come on the ground.

Brown's frame and the first round

Brown is the much longer man at 6'3" with a 78-inch reach, against Smith's 5'10" frame and 72-inch reach. He fights at range, with 77% of his landed significant strikes coming at distance, and lands 4.39 a minute at 47% accuracy.

Smith's own striking numbers look ferocious, 6.88 landed per minute at 63% accuracy, but they rest on just 14.8 UFC minutes. He also gets hit: only 49% of opponents' strikes miss him. A southpaw wrestler walking in under a long jab is the opening Brown needs, and Brown has the hands to use it. He dropped Nicolas Dalby and stopped him at distance in April 2025.

The problem for Brown is where he loses. Gabriel Bonfim finished him with a knee in the clinch in round two, and against Holland he went 0 for 4 on takedowns while getting outlanded 56 to 46 on all three cards 30-27.

Tested versus untested

This is the sharpest gap in the fight. Brown's last five UFC opponents carried a combined 43-21-2 record into those bouts. Smith's four opponents were a combined 10-11, and two of them were debuting. Niko Price is the only established name on his ledger, and that was the one fight that went past the first round: Smith spent 341 seconds in control before a rear-naked choke in round two.

Smith's UFC fights average 3.7 minutes; Brown's average 10.5. Nobody knows what Smith looks like in round three against someone who survives the opening rush. At 36, on a two-fight skid and off the welterweight top 15, Brown's path is to be that someone. He has been finished five times in the UFC, though, three by knockout and two by submission, so surviving Smith's opening five minutes is no given.

Both men made weight at 170.5 pounds.

What the market sees

Smith is a solid favorite at a median -267.5, with Brown at +219. That works out to about 69.9% for Smith once the books' margin is removed. The money has moved his way since our feed first recorded the fight at -255.

The market is paying for the unbeaten record, the 10 pro knockouts and the wrestling pedigree. Brown's case is the length, the experience and the fact that Smith has never been tested by someone of his caliber or made to work deep into a fight.
