Francis Marshall vs Dakota Hope prediction: Francis Marshall misses weight and invites Dakota Hope's brawl

A drained Marshall needs his grappling to keep a short-notice slugger from turning this into the firefight Hope fought in his debut.

The moneyline
Francis Marshall-207.5 (64.8% implied)
Dakota Hope+173 (35.2% implied)

Median of US sportsbooks; implied chances have the books' margin removed. Updated Oct 31, 6:01 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Marshall wants takedowns and long control stretches; Hope wants a clinch-heavy scrap where his power and pace can tax a fighter who struggled on the scale.
  • Watch the first clinch. Watch the first clinch. 42% of Hope's landed strikes came there in his debut, and Marshall will want to turn it into a takedown.
  • Marshall sits at -215 after first showing at -258, with money moving toward Hope. Marshall's 148-pound weigh-in bears on it most.

Two pounds and a question mark

Francis Marshall weighed in at 148 pounds on Friday. That was two pounds over the non-title featherweight limit, and he was reported to look drained on the scale. Dakota Hope came in at 145.5.

Multiple weigh-in reports say the bout goes ahead at catchweight, with Marshall forfeiting 20% of his purse to Hope. Official word on revised terms was still not fully settled at last report. Every other fighter on the card made weight.

Hope is the short-notice replacement for Gastón Bolaños, who withdrew after a training injury. Both men's most recent UFC fights came at lightweight. Marshall's struggle to make featherweight is now the backdrop for everything else in this fight.

Hope's pace against Marshall's patience

Hope's only UFC fight was a war. He landed 106 significant strikes against Kai Kamaka III, absorbed 105, and lost a split decision. That works out to 7.07 significant strikes landed per minute, though it is built on a single 15-minute fight. He does much of his damage up close, with 42% of his landed strikes coming in the clinch. He arrives with five knockout wins on his pro ledger and a reputation for power.

Marshall works at a different speed, landing 2.34 significant strikes a minute. He is harder to hit, though: opponents miss 54% of their strikes against him, while Hope avoided only 34% in his debut. The concern is what happens when Marshall does get caught. Isaac Dulgarian landed 35 significant strikes on him and finished him with elbows from mount inside the first round.

Where Marshall takes control

Marshall's path runs through grappling. He stops 89% of takedown attempts and has spent 32% of his UFC fight time in control. In his last fight against Lucas Brennan, he leaned on that game and banked 396 seconds of control on the way to a clean decision.

He also holds a clear length edge, with a 72-inch reach against Hope's 67. That gives him room to land straight rights and leg kicks on the way in, the way he opened against Brennan. Hope has said he sees openings for a knockout or a submission. If Marshall's gas tank holds after a hard cut, the long control stretches favor the American Top Team fighter. If it fades, Hope's pace becomes the story of rounds two and three.

What the price is saying

Marshall is the -215 favorite, which implies a 65.2% chance once the books' margin is removed. He was -258 when our feed first priced the fight, and the money has moved toward Hope since.

The weight miss gives that drift some logic. Marshall is 4-3 in the UFC, and his opponents have mostly been winless or making their debuts. Hope is 11-2 as a pro by the more common count, though one listing has him at 11-1. Hope has looked dangerous so far, but with one fight he has yet to prove he can stop a takedown-first opponent.
