- Nolan was -123 when our feed first priced this. Now Moicano is -122, a 52.4% no-vig favorite.
The back Moicano wants
Tom Nolan has spent two years climbing the lightweight ladder at a sprint. On Halloween night at Meta APEX he headlines for the first time, against a 37-year-old Brazilian who has fought for the title and says he has already found the hole in the 26-year-old's game.
Moicano isn't hiding his plan. In a Portuguese-language interview this week he said Nolan often turns his back on the ground, and added: "once he's on the ground, I'm going to crush him." His record backs up the threat. Seven of his 13 UFC wins came by submission, most recently a rear-naked choke on Chris Duncan in April.
The hard part is getting Nolan down. Moicano lands 1.68 takedowns per 15 minutes at 40% accuracy. Nolan stops 58% of takedown attempts, a number Moicano will want to test. He is no passive grappler, though. He averages 1.39 submission attempts per 15 minutes, choked out Charlie Campbell in the first round and controlled Fares Ziam for 407 seconds in June.
Length, knees and the body
Standing, Nolan is the taller man, and he fights like it. He lands 4.72 significant strikes a minute, and 32% of them go to the body. His first UFC win came from a knee to the body in the clinch. Moicano named the left knee and the spinning kicks as the weapons he respects most.
The defensive numbers favor the veteran. Moicano absorbs 3.55 significant strikes a minute and makes 60% of his opponents' strikes miss. Nolan makes only 48% miss, so Moicano's straight punches should find a home. One caveat: Nolan's rates rest on just 54 minutes of UFC cage time, while Moicano's are built on two decades of fights against far stiffer opposition.
Five rounds, two chins
This is Nolan's first five-round fight. Moicano has gone the championship distance before, losing a decision to Rafael dos Anjos in 2022, but he is also the fighter who has to carry his age into the late rounds.
Both men can be hurt. Moicano has been stopped by strikes three times in the UFC, the last against Rafael Fiziev in 2020. Nolan's lone UFC loss came in his debut, a first-round stoppage by Nikolas Motta, and he has won five straight since.
The buildup has an edge. Nolan accepted the fight on a week's notice for an earlier card after Brian Ortega withdrew, and Moicano's team asked for more time. At media day Nolan questioned Moicano's hunger. Moicano has hinted that his UFC run may end soon after this bout, though he says he plans to fight out his deal. Both men made weight Friday.
A market that flipped
When our feed first priced the bout, Nolan was the -123 favorite. The money has since moved the other way. Moicano is now -122 with Nolan at even money, a 52.4% no-vig chance for the Brazilian.
Strength of schedule helps explain the shift. Moicano's last five opponents were a combined 49-14-1 in the UFC going in. Nolan's were 13-8-1. Nolan said Moicano has "a scary striking skill set, a scary grappling skill set." Five rounds will show whether the young Australian has met that level before.
