West Virginia Mountaineers vs TCU Horned Frogs prediction: Michael Hawkins Jr.'s legs run into TCU's suffocating run defense
West Virginia's quarterback-run offense has carried a broken defense all season, and Fort Worth hosts the defense best built to take that offense away.
| Spread | TCU -10.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 58 |
- TCU's defense should slow West Virginia's ground game while Craig attacks the nation's worst pass defense. TCU's stalling offense decides the margin.
- Hawkins and Cam Cook against a TCU front ranked 3rd in FBS in rushing EPA allowed.
- Our model makes TCU -11.43, a bit past the market's -10, with a 56.5 total that matches the books.
Hawkins runs into a wall
West Virginia has spent this season trying to outscore its own defense. Saturday's homecoming crowd in Fort Worth gets a TCU defense built to stop exactly what the Mountaineers do best.
Michael Hawkins Jr. drives Rich Rodriguez's quarterback-run spread. He has 749 rushing yards this season and 14 rushing touchdowns. Cam Cook adds 833 yards, and together they power an offense that ranks 5th nationally in rushing yards per game.
That is the wrong profile for this opponent. TCU allows rushing EPA (expected points added per play) of -0.212, 3rd in FBS. Cook is also cooling. Against Cincinnati he managed 40 yards on 15 carries.
So Hawkins's arm becomes the swing factor. He threw for 464 yards against Cincinnati, the best passing game of his college career. In the fourth quarter alone he threw for 241 yards. The catch is that TCU's pass defense ranks 12th in EPA allowed, so the explosive version of Hawkins has to show up again against a much better secondary.
A defense with no identity
The other side of the ball is where West Virginia's season comes apart. The Mountaineers allow 310.1 passing yards per game, dead last in FBS. Their passing EPA allowed also ranks 138th. Across the Iowa State, Arizona and Cincinnati games, they gave up 46.3 points per game.
Defensive coordinator Zac Alley moved to the coaches' booth for the Arizona game, and the Wildcats scored 52 anyway. Rodriguez said his defense has "no identity." This week he took a different tone: "I told our defensive staff [Tuesday] morning, we have good enough players."
TCU has the passing game to make that claim look hollow. The Horned Frogs average 282.3 passing yards per game, 20th nationally, behind senior Jaden Craig. Jordan Dwyer has emerged as a vertical option, with 250 receiving yards in the two games he has played. Our projection puts TCU at 288 passing yards.
TCU's offense is the catch
The case against a lopsided TCU win starts with TCU's own offense. The Frogs have scored 13.3 points per game over their last three, against UCF, BYU and Baylor. They rank 126th in rushing yards per game and 106th in points per scoring opportunity, so drives that cross midfield too often end in field goals or nothing.
Protection is the bigger worry. TCU allows 2.83 sacks per game, 123rd nationally. Craig has thrown four interceptions over that same stretch.
West Virginia may not be built to exploit it. The Mountaineers' havoc rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup, ranks 92nd. On the other side, Koron Hayward gives TCU the pass rusher this game lacks: he had three sacks at Baylor.
The market moved to TCU
Books opened TCU at -6.5 and have pushed the line to -10. Our model goes further, at TCU -11.43, and gives the Frogs a 76% chance to win.
Our total of 56.5 matches the market exactly, which fits a game where one defense can't stop anybody and one offense struggles to finish. The first half is where our tested picks live, and the model makes TCU -6.74 at the break.
The series offers a reminder that these games tighten. TCU won 23-17 in Morgantown last season.

Numbers that matter
| TCU rushing EPA allowed | -0.212 | Ranks 3rd in FBS and stands directly in the path of West Virginia's run-first attack. |
|---|---|---|
| WVU passing yards allowed rank | 138th | West Virginia allows 310.1 passing yards per game, the most in FBS. |
| TCU sacks allowed per game | 2.83 | Ranks 123rd, the main reason TCU's passing game hasn't turned into points. |
| TCU points per game, last 3 | 13.3 | The offense has stalled even as the defense carried it. |
| Current spread | -10.0 | TCU opened at -6.5 and the market has moved toward the Frogs. |
