Quick take
  • Expect long, patient Houston drives against Utah's stingy defense, with the Utes leaning on Wayshawn Parker and a Houston secondary that has struggled all year.
  • Houston's offense, first in success rate, against a Utah defense that ranks 8th in success rate allowed.
  • Our fair line is Utah -7.8 against a market of -6.5, a modest lean to the Utes, and our total matches the market at 56.5.

Houston never falls behind schedule

Utah carries the nation's longest active winning streak, 12 games, into a night with College GameDay in town. No. 14 Houston arrives with the most efficient offense the No. 10 Utes have seen, and a résumé that has asked more of it.

Houston leads FBS in success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) at 54.6%. It also leads the country in third-down conversion at 61.4%. Its EPA per play (expected points added per play) ranks 2nd of 138. The Cougars don't hit home runs, though. They rank 127th in explosiveness, so they score by stacking first downs, not by striking deep.

Conner Weigman runs it cleanly. He has 20 touchdown passes against 2 interceptions at 8.9 yards per attempt, and he just threw for 343 yards and 5 touchdowns against Oklahoma State. Utah won't rattle him easily. The Utes rank 95th in sacks per game, while Houston ranks 16th in sacks allowed.

Utah's defense is built to beat exactly this kind of offense. It ranks 8th in success rate allowed and 18th on third down. Its flaw is the big play: the Utes rank 125th in explosiveness allowed. Houston is poorly built to exploit that weakness. That makes the night a contest of patience: Houston's drives against Utah's ability to get one stop per series.

Parker runs behind a patched line

Utah's offense runs through Wayshawn Parker, who averages 6.7 yards per carry. He ran for 174 yards against Iowa State and 171 against Kansas before Colorado held him to 98 on 23 carries. The Utes rank 8th in rushing EPA.

This is the toughest front Parker has seen. Houston allows 82.6 rushing yards per game, 6th nationally, and its havoc rate (share of plays with a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup) of 20.1% ranks 12th. Utah ranks 77th in havoc allowed, and it plays without Kelvin Obot, who is out with an ankle injury; Moea'i is expected to replace him. Houston has its own hole on the interior, with nose guard De'Marion Thomas ruled out.

If the run stalls, Devon Dampier has the softer target. Houston ranks 128th in passing yards allowed per game and 104th in passing EPA allowed. Dampier has been loose with the ball lately, though, with 3 interceptions over his last three games, 2 of them at Colorado.

One résumé is sturdier

The records look alike. The schedules don't. Houston's FBS opponents average an SP+ rating of 9.4; Utah's average -1.5.

Houston won 35-16 at Kansas State as a 2.5-point underdog, then beat No. 18 Oklahoma State 35-32 for its first ranked home win since 2015. Utah's last outing was shakier. The Utes led Colorado 13-0 at halftime, allowed 17 unanswered points and survived a final Hail Mary to win 27-24 as a 15-point favorite. Morgan Scalley, in his first season replacing Kyle Whittingham, said afterward he didn't think Utah should have won on the metrics.

Where drives end

Houston's defense bends badly once opponents get close. It allows 4.66 points per scoring opportunity, 134th of 138. Utah's offense finishes well, ranking 14th at 4.8 points per opportunity. That gap is Utah's clearest edge.

Houston fights back with field position. Its opponents start drives at their own 23.6-yard line on average, the best mark in the country. Long fields help a defense that is weak in the red zone, and they favor Houston's patient offense over a Utah attack that wants quick scores.

What the market and model see

Utah opened at -7 and has drifted to -6.5, with the move toward Houston. The total sits at 56.5. Utah is 5-1 against the spread; Houston is 3-4, failing to cover in three of four games as a favorite.

Our model makes Utah a 7.8-point favorite with a 69% chance to win, projecting roughly 32-24. That likes the Utes a little more than the market does, and it matches the market's total exactly.
