Texas Tech Red Raiders vs Cincinnati Bearcats prediction: Texas Tech's run wall stands between Cincinnati and a Homecoming upset
Cincinnati's ground game is one of the most efficient in the country, but unbeaten Texas Tech has smothered the run all season, and the Bearcats' defense can't afford a slow day from the offense.
| Spread | Texas Tech -11.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 57 |
- Tech's front slows Cincinnati's run game, and Will Hammond finds room against a Bearcats pass defense that struggles to get off the field.
- Cole Tabb and JC French on the ground against a Tech run defense ranked 5th in rushing yards allowed.
- Our model makes Texas Tech a 12.2-point favorite, slightly more than the 10.5-point market line.
Tabb Runs Into the Wall
Texas Tech arrives at Nippert Stadium 6-0 and ranked eighth in the AP poll, carrying a defense built to choke off the run. Cincinnati brings the one weapon that can test it. The Red Raiders have never played in Cincinnati, and the Bearcats, on a losing skid, need this Homecoming game badly.
The Bearcats rank 4th nationally in rushing EPA (expected points added per play on runs). They rank 6th in line yards per carry, a measure of the push the offensive line creates. Cole Tabb has piled up 448 rushing yards, and French gives defenses a quarterback to account for on every read.
Tech's run defense is the best unit in this game. The Red Raiders allow 82.2 rushing yards per game, 5th in the country. They also rank 19th in rushing EPA allowed.
The schedule adds a caveat. Tech's FBS opponents carry an average SP+ rating of 1.2, while Cincinnati's average 3.9, so the Bearcats built their numbers against somewhat sturdier competition. Depth is a worry too: Gi'Bran Payne is questionable. When Arizona held Tabb to 19 rushing yards, Cincinnati lost 34-7.
French's Deep Shots
If Cincinnati can't run, French has to win through the air, and Tech's pass defense is stranger than its yardage suggests. The Red Raiders allow 281.7 passing yards per game, 134th nationally. Yet they rank 23rd in passing EPA allowed, which means opponents pile up volume without much efficiency.
French has been careful with the ball, with 9 touchdown passes and 0 interceptions. He also has a vertical threat in Malachi Henry, whose 59-yard third-down catch late in the West Virginia loss was the biggest play of that game. Tech's secondary may be thinner on Saturday: safety Peyton Morgan is questionable.
Hammond Gets His Openings
The other side of the ball tilts hard toward Tech. Cincinnati ranks 126th in passing EPA allowed and 127th in third-down conversion rate allowed.
The Bearcats' pass rush also lost its most productive piece. Defensive lineman Josh Hough is out with a lower leg injury, and fellow lineman Nathan Nunn is out as well. That matters because Tech's line has a soft spot: the Red Raiders rank 124th in havoc allowed, the share of plays that end in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup. Cincinnati's own havoc rate ranks 77th, so the Bearcats may lack the disruptors to exploit it even before losing Hough.
Hammond completes 68.5% of his passes. His flaw is giveaways: he has 5 interceptions, 3 of them against Sam Houston. Running back Cameron Dickey is out. That puts more on J'Koby Williams, who has averaged 8.5 yards per carry over his last three games.
Turnovers and Red-Zone Math
Cincinnati's best defense may be its offense's ball security. The Bearcats commit 0.33 turnovers per game, 2nd in the country. Tech forces 2.0 takeaways per game, which ranks 8th, so the Bearcats' ball security will be tested.
The red zone favors Tech. The Red Raiders allow 2.6 points per scoring opportunity, while Cincinnati allows 4.53. Tech ranks 12th in points per opportunity allowed, while Cincinnati ranks 131st.
What the Line Says
Texas Tech opened as an 11.5-point favorite and has drifted to 10.5, with the move toward Cincinnati. Our model goes the other way, making Tech a 12.2-point favorite and giving Cincinnati a 22% chance to win.
Our total sits right on the market's 56.5. For the first half, our numbers make Tech a 7.2-point favorite. Our testing shows that favorites who cover also tend to clear their rushing lines, which fits a Tech offense leaning on Williams.
Key players
- Will Hammond (Texas Tech): He completes 68.5% of his passes but has thrown 5 interceptions, so ball security is his one flaw.
- J'Koby Williams (Texas Tech): With Dickey out, Williams carries the load after averaging 8.5 yards per carry over his last three games.
- Kenny Johnson (Texas Tech): Tech's top receiver has 418 yards and posted 120 against Arizona State.
- Anthony Holmes Jr. (Texas Tech): His 4.0 sacks lead a pass rush facing a Cincinnati line without much margin for error.
- JC French (Cincinnati): He has 9 touchdown passes and 0 interceptions this season.
- Cole Tabb (Cincinnati): He has averaged 9.1 yards per carry with 8 rushing touchdowns.
- Malachi Henry (Cincinnati): He turns few touches into big plays, with 266 yards on 8 catches.
- Patrick Bauer (Cincinnati): With Hough out, Bauer's 4.5 tackles for loss over the last three games make him the front's top disruptor.
Numbers that matter
| Cincinnati rushing EPA rank | 4th | The Bearcats' ground game is their best path to points. |
|---|---|---|

| Cincinnati turnovers per game | 0.33 | Ranks 2nd and runs into a Tech defense ranked 8th in takeaways. |
| Market spread | 10.5 | The line opened at 11.5 and moved toward Cincinnati, while our number sits at 12.2. |
