Texas A&M Aggies vs Alabama Crimson Tide prediction: Marcel Reed's sputtering passing game walks into Alabama's takeaway machine
Texas A&M's defense can keep this close for a while, but an offense that scored 6 points at LSU and at Missouri has to find a way to move the ball in Tuscaloosa.
| Spread | Alabama -13.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 50 |
- Alabama's front should slow A&M's run game, leaving Reed to throw. The Aggies' defense keeps it tight early before Alabama pulls away.
- Reed against Alabama's ball-hawking defense: 6 interceptions this season against a unit forcing 2.29 takeaways per game, 3rd in FBS.
- Our model makes Alabama a 14.75-point favorite with a 50 total. That is close to the market, with an 82% home win probability.
Reed against the ball hawks
Alabama has dropped two straight, 17-20 to Georgia and 10-26 at Tennessee. The Crimson Tide now need this one at home, and the stakes run both ways. Texas A&M hasn't won in Tuscaloosa since 2012, and Mike Elko's team badly needs a result that changes its season.
The question is whether A&M can score. Marcel Reed remains the starter, and Elko has stood by him despite the struggles. Reed is completing 55.7% of his passes at 6.1 yards per attempt, with 7 touchdowns against 6 interceptions. The Aggies rank 122nd in passing EPA (expected points added per play), and their explosiveness, the average value of their successful plays, ranks 132nd of 138. In the two games against real resistance, at LSU and at Missouri, A&M scored 6 points each time. Against Missouri, Reed went 19 of 39 with two interceptions and lost 18 yards on the ground.
That is a bad profile to bring against Alabama, which forces 2.29 takeaways per game, 3rd in FBS. The receiver room is also thinning. Terry Bussey is out for the season, Keishaun Johnson is out, Mario Craver is questionable, and Ashton Bethel-Roman's return is unclear after he missed the Citadel game for personal reasons. TK Norman has become the steady option, with 179 yards over the last three games.
Alabama's pass defense does leave some openings. It allows 230.9 passing yards per game, 101st nationally, and ranks 102nd in explosiveness allowed. If Reed hits a couple of shots, the game changes. Nothing in his recent tape says he will.
No easy yards up front
A&M's best path is the ground game. The Aggies rank 39th in rushing EPA and 40th in line yards per carry, a measure of how much push the offensive line creates. KJ Edwards is averaging 6.7 yards a carry.
That runs straight into the strongest part of Alabama's defense. The Tide allow just 2.27 line yards per carry, 6th in FBS, and rank 11th in rushing EPA allowed. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, is 23.7%, 18th nationally. Alabama will be without DT Terrance Green, and DL Fatutoa Henry is questionable. Even so, our projection gives A&M only 89 rushing yards. A&M already lost lineman Blake Ivy for the season, and OL Travon Baugh is questionable.
Russell should have time
Alabama's offensive line is its weak spot. The Tide allow 3.0 sacks per game, 130th in FBS, and rank 122nd in havoc allowed. Havoc counts plays with a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup. This is the wrong week for opponents to exploit it. A&M gets just 0.71 sacks per game, 135th of 138, and DE Anto Saka and DT DJ Hicks are both questionable.
Keelon Russell's season line is strong: 9.1 yards per attempt, 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. His recent form is shakier. He managed 147 yards with two picks at Tennessee, and Alabama's offensive EPA over the last three games has fallen to 0.131 per play. Captain Ryan Coleman-Williams is out as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery, and center Racin Delgatty is questionable after missing the Tennessee game. Lotzeir Brooks, with 415 receiving yards, carries more of the load.
A&M's defense is genuinely good. It allows 164.1 passing yards per game, 10th in FBS, and a 29.8% third-down rate, 11th. But the schedule behind those numbers matters. The Aggies' FBS opponents average an SP+ of 4.4, while Alabama's average 10.0.
Hidden yards and the number
A&M's special teams can shorten the field. The Aggies' net punting average of 49.1 ranks 3rd, and their kicker is 12/12 on field goals. Alabama gives the ball away 1.57 times per game, 106th, so A&M will have chances to steal possessions. The Aggies also allow only 2.74 points per scoring opportunity, 20th nationally, which is how a weak offense stays within range.
The line opened at Alabama -15.5 and has moved to 14, toward A&M, with the total at 50. Alabama failed to cover as a favorite in each of its two losses, and A&M is 3-4 against the spread. If Alabama covers, it likely does so on the ground. Our testing shows that when favorites cover, their rushing tends to clear its line, and we project Alabama for 157 rushing yards.

Numbers that matter
| A&M passing EPA rank | 122nd | The Aggies' passing game ranks near the bottom of FBS heading into a hostile road test. |
|---|---|---|
| Alabama takeaways per game | 2.29 | That ranks 3rd nationally, against a quarterback with 6 interceptions. |
| Alabama line yards allowed | 2.27 | This ranks 6th and shuts down A&M's most reliable way to move the ball. |
| A&M sacks per game | 0.71 | At 135th of 138, A&M can't exploit Alabama's 130th-ranked pass protection. |
