Sacramento State vs Ball State Cardinals prediction: Sacramento State's sputtering offense gets its softest test yet at Ball State
Ball State owns one of the worst defenses in the country, and the question is whether a Hornets attack averaging 7.7 points over three games can punish it.
| Spread | Ball State -14.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 51.5 |
- Ball State leans on TJ Horton and Keldric Luster while Sacramento State's offense, stalled for three straight weeks, struggles to keep pace.
- Jackson Sharman against a Ball State pass defense ranked 133rd in passing EPA allowed. If he can't move it here, he can't anywhere.
- Our model makes Ball State a 15.16-point favorite, a touch past the 14.5-point market line, and lands on the same 51 total.
Hornets running on empty
Sacramento State's first FBS season has reached the point where scoring at all is the question. Over its last three games the Hornets averaged 7.7 points and allowed 40.3. The low point came last week, a 48-7 homecoming loss to Ohio in which Jackson Sharman threw for 69 yards.
Sharman has been the starter since Carson Conklin broke a bone in his throwing arm at Eastern Michigan. Conklin has not returned, and Sac State hasn't publicly named Saturday's starter. Sharman's recent form is grim: 4.7 yards per attempt over his last three games, with one touchdown pass. The whole offense ranks 134th of 138 in EPA per play (expected points added on each snap), and it is dead last in explosiveness, the measure of how much a team gains on its successful plays.
Here is the catch. Ball State's defense ranks 137th in EPA per play allowed and gives up 37.9 points per game, 135th nationally. Sac State has played a soft schedule, with an average opponent SP+ of -4.6. This is still a defense that lets bad offenses look functional, so a Hornets shutout is not the likely script.
Horton's carries set the tone
Ball State wants to run, and Sacramento State gives little resistance up front. The Hornets allow 176.1 rushing yards per game, 107th nationally. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, sits 121st, and their havoc rate, the share of plays with a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup, ranks 135th.
TJ Horton is the hammer. He averages 6.7 yards per carry with seven rushing touchdowns, four of them in the last three games. Our projection has Ball State running for 174 yards. Keldric Luster adds a second ground threat after he ran for 125 yards at Bowling Green.
The Hornets can't easily answer in kind. Their line yards per carry, a measure of how much push the offensive line creates, ranks 130th, and their rushing EPA ranks 133rd. Ball State's run defense is poor too, but Sac State hasn't shown the efficiency to exploit it.
Luster is playing his best football
Luster comes in as the MAC Offensive Player of the Week. At Bowling Green, Ball State trailed by seven with under a minute left and drove 78 yards to tie it as time expired. Horton's 1-yard run and a two-point conversion won it in overtime. That win also snapped a 14-game road losing streak.
Luster has completed 65.3% of his passes over the last three games at 6.4 yards per attempt, both up from his season marks. Ball State's offense ranks 24th in explosiveness, so its successful plays tend to be big ones. Sac State ranks 125th in explosiveness allowed.
The Hornets' 188.9 passing yards allowed per game ranks a respectable 37th, but that number hides the damage. Their passing EPA allowed ranks 127th, which means opponents haven't needed to throw much to score.
The receiver room is thin. Derion Talbert is out, and Donovan Hamilton, who has 203 receiving yards over his last three games, was listed questionable on reports dated to last week or earlier.
Where the hidden yards go
Ball turnovers tilt hard toward the home side. Sacramento State gives the ball away 1.86 times per game, 130th nationally, and forces just 0.43 takeaways per game, 137th. Ball State's turnover rate of 1.0 per game ranks 41st.
The one special-teams duel worth watching is Ball State's punt return game, which averages 19.0 yards and ranks 7th, against a Sac State coverage unit that allows 1.5 yards per return, 13th. Freshman punter Hamish Adams pinned four punts inside the 20 against Ohio. That kind of day would help Sac State, because Ball State already starts its drives at the 25.6-yard line on average, 133rd nationally.
What the number says
Ball State opened as a 14.5-point favorite and has not moved across 25 books. Our fair line is Ball State by 15.16 with an 83% win probability, and our fair total of 51.0 matches the market. We project roughly 33.1 points for Ball State and 17.9 for Sacramento State.
The role is new for the Cardinals, who were underdogs in each of their last four games and covered the last three. Sac State is 2-5 against the spread.
The game script fits one tested pattern: when the favorite covers, the favorite's rushing goes over its line 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated. If Ball State covers, Horton is likely doing the heavy lifting. Our first-half number is Ball State -7.5 with a total of 26.29.

Numbers that matter
| Sac State points, last 3 | 7.7 | The Hornets' scoring average against Massachusetts, Bowling Green and Ohio. |
|---|---|---|
| Ball State EPA allowed rank | 137th | One of the worst defenses in FBS, which gives Sac State's offense a rare opening. |
| Sac State explosiveness rank | 138th | Dead last nationally, so the Hornets rarely gain much even when a play works. |
| Horton yards per carry | 6.7 | Ball State's lead back runs against a front ranked 121st in stuff rate. |
| Our fair spread | -15.16 | Our number sits just past the 14.5-point market line on Ball State. |
