Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs Northwestern Wildcats prediction: Chiles and Northwestern's ground game aim at Rutgers' broken run defense

Rutgers can throw with anyone thanks to KJ Duff, but a 16.5-point spread says the Scarlet Knights can't stop Chip Kelly's run game long enough to keep pace.

Quick take
  • Northwestern runs early and often against a bottom-tier Rutgers front, while Lonergan and Duff try to keep it close through the air.
  • KJ Duff against a Northwestern secondary missing Josh Fussell and likely safety Robert Fitzgerald.
  • Our model makes Northwestern a 17.9-point favorite, 1.4 points beyond the market, with the total right at 58.5.

Ground game against a broken front

Northwestern is 5-1, ranked 24th and unbeaten at Ryan Field. Rutgers arrives with a quarterback who can throw, a receiver chasing a program record and a run defense that ranks among the worst in the country. The spread is a bet on that last part.

Chip Kelly's offense is a quarterback-run spread, and Rutgers has had no answer for the run. The Scarlet Knights rank 129th of 138 in rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play, a measure of how much each snap moves the scoreboard). They give up 185.2 rushing yards per game, 118th. Their front loses at the line, too, allowing 3.11 line yards per carry (107th). Their havoc rate, the share of plays with a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup, ranks 115th.

Northwestern has several ways to exploit that. Caleb Komolafe ran for 188 yards against Penn State. Joseph Himon II averages 11.5 yards per carry on a lighter workload. Aidan Chiles has seven rushing touchdowns, including the one-yard score that tied Michigan State last week. Our projection has the Wildcats running for 233 yards.

The pass game is no relief for Rutgers. Northwestern ranks 13th in passing EPA, and Rutgers' pass defense ranks 115th in the same measure. That secondary just lost defensive backs Kaj Sanders and Zahmir Dawud for the season. Chiles has reportedly carried a questionable tag on recent injury reports, but he is expected to play, and no newer designation has surfaced.

Duff against a thinning secondary

Rutgers' best path runs through the air. Dylan Lonergan starts, and the offense ranks 30th in passing EPA and 25th in explosiveness. KJ Duff is the reason: 741 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after a nine-catch, 113-yard day at Maryland, and he sits one catch shy of tying the program's single-season receptions record.

Northwestern's pass defense gives him room. It allows 230.5 passing yards per game, 100th nationally. Defensive back Josh Fussell is out, and safety Robert Fitzgerald, who has two interceptions, is doubtful. The Wildcats do limit the home run, ranking 19th in explosiveness allowed, so Duff may have to win underneath.

Lonergan should get time. Rutgers allows 2.33 sacks per game (103rd), but Northwestern's rush has been just as quiet at 1.5 sacks per game (100th). Dantae Chin's move to left tackle steadied the line against Maryland. The bigger risk is Lonergan's own ledger: six interceptions this season.

Don't expect Rutgers to balance it with the run. The offense ranks 104th in line yards per carry. Antwan Raymond is questionable after 29 yards on 16 carries at Maryland, which leaves Clay Thevenin, who ran for 109 that day, as the steadier option.

Turnovers, punts and schedules

The cleanest edge in the game is ball security. Northwestern turns it over 0.33 times per game, second in the country, and Chiles has thrown 139 passes without an interception. Rutgers gives it away 1.83 times per game, 124th. An underdog that needs extra possessions can't afford that gap.

Rutgers owns a few hidden-yard edges of its own. It ranks first in the nation in penalty yards at 28.7 per game. Northwestern's gross punting average ranks 131st, and its coverage allows 16.0 yards per punt return (126th). Short fields are Rutgers' most realistic way to steal points.

Schedule context also helps the visitors' case. The FBS opponents Rutgers has faced carry an average SP+ of 5.3, against 1.4 for Northwestern's. Both teams lost to Indiana. Rutgers fell 15-47 at home. Northwestern lost 23-29 on the road as a 20-point underdog. Rutgers has also not beaten a ranked opponent in 17 years.

Where our number lands

The line opened at Northwestern -16.5 and hasn't budged across 31 books, with the total at 58.5. Our model projects a 38.2 to 20.3 final. That's a fair spread of Northwestern -17.9, a 1.4-point lean toward the home side. It matches the market total exactly and gives the Wildcats an 87% chance to win.

The likely script fits the lean. In tested games, when the favorite covers, its rushing goes over its line 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated. That ties a Northwestern cover to the Wildcats' ground game. For the first half, our number has Northwestern -11.4 with a total of 29.8.
