Rice Owls vs Florida Atlantic Owls prediction: Rice brings the country's sixth-best ground game to FAU's soft run defense
Florida Atlantic can throw with anyone, but a run defense ranked 134th faces a Rice offense that only runs, and whether Jacurri Brown can play shapes how Rice runs it.
| Spread | Florida Atlantic -8 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 54 |
- FAU should move the ball through the air. Rice's path is to grind on the ground against a defense allowing 218.2 rushing yards per game.
- Watch Rice's run game, 6th nationally in rushing yards, against an FAU defense ranked 136th in rushing EPA allowed.
- Our model makes FAU an 8.9-point favorite, 1.4 points more than the market, and matches the 51.5 total.
The run game FAU can't stop
Florida Atlantic gave up 56 points at Army last Saturday. The next team on the schedule runs the ball as well as almost anyone. Rice is 1-6 and can barely complete a pass, but it rushes for 239.9 yards per game, 6th in the country.
Rice's plan is no secret. Its offense ranks 136th in passing yards per game and dead last, 138th of 138, in passing EPA (expected points added per play). Everything goes through the ground, at a slow pace.
That aims straight at FAU's weakest spot. Florida Atlantic allows 218.2 rushing yards per game, 134th nationally, and ranks 136th in rushing EPA allowed. The front rarely wins at the line. Its stuff rate (share of runs stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage) is 15.9%, which ranks 108th. Explosiveness allowed ranks 135th, so runs that break against this defense tend to go a long way.
Rice's own push up front is ordinary. Its 2.96 line yards per carry (a measure of how much ground the offensive line wins on each run) ranks 92nd. The yardage comes from volume and the quarterback's legs more than from the line. Our projection has Rice running for 230 yards.
Who takes Rice's snaps
Jacurri Brown is the engine. He has 668 rushing yards and 6 rushing touchdowns this season. Against Tulsa he ran for 154 yards, including touchdown runs of 50 and 78 yards. As a passer he has struggled, going 10-of-30 over his last three games.
Brown was also hurt against Tulsa and shared snaps with Gael Ochoa while he spent time on the sideline. His status for Saturday is unconfirmed. Abell said Rice had prepared to get Ochoa on the field. If Ochoa starts, Rice loses the one player who has made its run game dangerous in space.
The injuries go beyond the quarterback. Slot receiver Ben Grice had surgery, receiver Barry Jackson Jr. was expected to miss time, and defensive tackle Dillan Botts is uncertain. Abell said "seven, eight, maybe nine surgeries" have happened in the program. This is Rice's last game before a bye.
Veltkamp has an easier day
Florida Atlantic's offense works the other way. Caden Veltkamp has completed 72.1% of his passes, with 15 touchdowns against 3 interceptions. FAU throws for 307.3 yards per game, 9th nationally. Even in the Army blowout, Veltkamp threw for 318 yards. Kelby Valsin (601 yards) and Easton Messer (540 yards) give him two reliable targets, and Messer caught 14 passes at Army.
Pass defense is Rice's best unit. It allows 188.7 passing yards per game, which ranks 36th. Third down is where it gives way. FAU converts 53.1% of third downs, 9th in the country, and Rice allows conversions on 43.2%, which ranks 112th.
The FAU form needs a discount. Its last three opponents were UL Monroe, Texas Southern and Army, and the best of them won 56-24. The average SP+ of FAU's FBS opponents is -4.6, against 3.5 for Rice's. Rice has played the tougher schedule, but it is 0-3 in conference play.
Hidden yards favor FAU
Rice starts its drives with worse field position than any team in the country, at an average of 24.3 (138th). Its opponents start at 32.9, which ranks 136th. Rice has to march farther than its opponents every time it has the ball. That is a heavy tax on an offense that converts 30.3% of third downs (132nd).
FAU's return game makes that gap wider. The home team averages 31.5 yards per kick return (8th) and 20.5 per punt return (4th). Rice has made 5 of 10 field goals, so long drives that stall may not end in points.
Where the numbers land
The line opened at FAU -7.5 and hasn't moved across 30 books. The total sits at 51.5. Rice is 3-4 against the spread, and FAU is 4-2. Last year's meeting went to FAU, 27-21 in Houston.
Our model makes Florida Atlantic an 8.9-point favorite, with a 71% chance to win, and agrees with the market on the 51.5 total. In the first half, it prices FAU at -5.1 and the total at 26.5. Brown's status is the swing factor. A healthy Brown keeps Rice's run game threatening, and without him the gap between these offenses grows.
Key players

Numbers that matter
| Rice rushing yards per game | 239.9 | Ranks 6th nationally and makes up almost all of Rice's offense. |
|---|---|---|
| FAU rushing yards allowed per game | 218.2 | Ranks 134th of 138, the weakest part of Florida Atlantic's team. |
| FAU third-down conversion | 53.1% | Ranks 9th, and Rice allows 43.2% on third down. |
| Rice average starting field position | 24.3 | Last in the country, so Rice has to drive farther than anyone else. |
