Pittsburgh Panthers vs Miami Hurricanes prediction: Mensah's arm targets the one crack in Pitt's run-proof defense

Pitt stops the run better than anyone in the country, but No. 1 Miami throws better than anyone, and the Panthers still haven't settled on a quarterback.

Quick take
  • Miami should move the ball through the air while Pitt's unsettled quarterback room struggles to keep pace against a top-15 pass rush.
  • Mensah and Malachi Toney against a Pitt defense that ranks 137th of 138 in explosiveness allowed.
  • Our number makes Miami a 20.36-point favorite with a 48.74 total, almost exactly where the market sits.

The wall has a ceiling

Miami plays its first game as the nation's No. 1 team since 2002, and the visitor brings the one defense in the country built to make a top offense uncomfortable. Pitt allows 58.4 rushing yards per game, the best mark in FBS. It also ranks 3rd in stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line.

The problem is what happens when the ball leaves the ground. Pitt ranks 137th of 138 in explosiveness allowed, a measure of how much damage opponents do on their successful plays. When something gets through, it tends to go a long way.

Miami is the worst possible opponent for that profile. The Hurricanes lead the nation in passing EPA (expected points added per play) at 0.713. Darian Mensah completes 80.8% of his throws at 10.6 yards per attempt, with 18 touchdowns against 1 interception. Malachi Toney is the target to watch: he has 758 yards and 8 touchdowns, and he caught 11 passes against Florida State last time out.

Who throws for Pitt?

Mason Heintschel tore his ACL against Virginia Tech on Oct. 2 and is out for the season. Pitt hasn't named a replacement. Pat Narduzzi said Monday the staff would choose between Holden Geriner and Corey Dailey after a week of practice and tape, and that both could play.

Dailey opened the Boston College game with a 75-yard touchdown to Blue Hicks on the first play. Pitt still lost, and it has turned the ball over five times in its last two games. Whoever starts faces a Miami front that averages 3.0 sacks per game, 13th nationally. Damon Wilson Jr. had 2.5 of those against Clemson alone.

There is one opening. Miami will be without cornerback Ja'Boree Antoine, whom Mario Cristobal expects back only toward the end of the year. Cataurus Hicks gives Pitt a receiver who can test a thinned secondary, if the quarterback has time.

Strength against strength up front

The run game is where both teams believe they own the line of scrimmage. Miami leads FBS in line yards per carry, a measure of how far blockers push a run before the back takes over, at 3.86. Pitt's front allows 1.7, 2nd in the country.

Miami will play without right guard Max Buchanan, which tilts that fight further toward the Panthers. Even at full strength, the Hurricanes' rushing EPA ranks only 64th, so their ground game has been steady rather than dominant. Expect Shannon Dawson, whom Narduzzi called the best coordinator in the country, to lean on Mensah rather than force runs into the strength of Pitt's defense.

Pitt's slide and the hidden yards

Pitt arrives on a two-game losing streak, beaten by North Carolina and Boston College as the favorite both times. Over its last three games the offense has a 39.4% success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule. The defense has allowed 27.0 points per game in that stretch, well above its season mark of 16.4.

Discipline is a recurring cost. Pitt gives away 81.7 penalty yards per game, 132nd nationally, and a road underdog can't afford to hand a top offense free field position.

Miami's unbeaten record deserves one caveat. Its FBS opponents carry an average SP+ of -1.0, a softer slate than Pitt has faced. Florida State took the Hurricanes to double overtime in a 43-35 game last week.

Where the number sits

Miami opened as a 23.5-point favorite, and the line has moved toward Pitt to 20. The total sits at 48.5.

Our model lands almost on top of the market: Miami by 20.36 with a total of 48.74, and a 90% win probability for the Hurricanes. That leaves little daylight on the full game. Miami closed at -20 against Wake Forest and Florida State this season and failed to cover both.
