Old Dominion Monarchs vs Louisiana Tech Bulldogs prediction: Ryan Huff inherits Old Dominion's broken offense against Louisiana Tech's havoc front

With Quinn Henicle out, the Monarchs bring FBS's last-ranked offense by EPA to Joe Aillet Stadium against a defense built to blow up plays behind the line.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 24, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Louisiana Tech's defense harasses a backup quarterback, wins field position and builds a lead its shaky kicking game may keep from getting out of hand.
  • ODU's protection, 137th in sacks allowed, against a Tech front that ranks eighth in havoc rate.
  • Our model makes it 29.4 to 15.6, Tech -13.8, less than a point off the market's 13.

Huff Walks Into the Fire

Louisiana Tech is 2-0 in the Sun Belt for a second straight season, and Old Dominion arrives with the least efficient offense in the country. The Monarchs rank 138th of 138 in EPA per play (expected points added per play). They are also last in success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, and last in yards per play.

That was with Quinn Henicle. Henicle is out after being upended at the end of the first half against Georgia Southern, leaving Ryan Huff or Jaxon Potter to take the snaps. Huff played the second half of that 23-15 loss, and his fumble on ODU's final possession ended the comeback.

The trouble starts up front. ODU allows 4.57 sacks per game, 137th in FBS. Its havoc allowed rate of 24.8% is dead last; havoc is the share of plays that end in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup. Louisiana Tech creates havoc on 21.0% of plays, eighth nationally, and ranks 16th in stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line. Alonzo Jackson Jr. leads that front with 5.0 sacks and 10.0 tackles for loss.

The ground game offers no escape hatch. ODU ranks 138th in line yards per carry, a measure of how much push the offensive line creates. Over its last three games the Monarchs averaged 11.7 points.

Tech's Ceiling Lives Through the Air

Louisiana Tech's offense runs on big plays rather than steady ones. It ranks 14th in explosiveness, the average value of its successful plays, but 104th in success rate. Blake Baker makes the big plays possible: he completes 68.7% of his passes and has thrown 9 touchdowns. He has 1 interception. Against Louisiana he threw for 319 yards and three scores.

Jalen Mickens leads the room with 476 receiving yards, and Eli Finley has 4 touchdown catches. Dane Benedix is out for the season.

The run game is the soft spot. Tech ranks 127th in line yards per carry, and running back Dylone Brooks is out. ODU's defense is genuinely good against the run, 21st in rushing EPA allowed, and 24th in yards per play allowed overall. It has frayed lately, though: opponents posted a 43.8% success rate over the last three games. The season mark is 36.5%. Javen Gibson, with 4.5 sacks, is the Monarch most likely to bother Baker behind a line that allows 2.17 sacks per game, 97th.

Short Fields, Missed Kicks

ODU's offense keeps handing opponents a head start. Opponents begin drives at the 33.1-yard line on average, worst in FBS. Turnovers drive that: the Monarchs give the ball away 2.14 times a game, 135th.

That feeds a Tech defense that takes it away 2.17 times a game, sixth nationally. The Bulldogs' offense starts at the 33.5 on average, fifth in the country. That is how Tech can score without a running game.

The counterweight is the kicking. Tech has made 3/10 field goals, last in FBS at 30.0%, and it ranks 129th in extra-point percentage. Drives that stall in field-goal range may come away empty, and that is the clearest path for ODU to stay inside a two-touchdown number.

Pricing the Two Touchdowns

Louisiana Tech opened as a 13-point favorite and the line hasn't budged across 27 books. The total sits at 45.5.

Our model projects a 29.4 to 15.6 final. That works out to Tech -13.8, 0.8 points more than the market. It gives Tech an 81.0% chance to win, and its fair total of 45.05 sits just under the posted number.

The cover records point the same way. Tech is 5-1 against the spread; ODU is 1-6, and its lone cover came in a 10-3 win at App State as a 9.5-point underdog. If Tech covers, history suggests the underdog's passing goes under, and ODU already averages 150.6 passing yards, 131st, before losing its starter.

Key players

  • Javen Gibson (Old Dominion): His 4.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss make him ODU's best chance to disrupt Baker.
  • Jackson Forrest (Old Dominion): His 41 tackles lead a defense that ranks 21st in rushing EPA allowed.
  • TJ Johnson (Old Dominion): He caught 2 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown against Georgia Southern, the offense's lone big-play threat.
  • Devin Roche (Old Dominion): He has 379 rushing yards at 4.0 per carry behind a line ranked 138th in line yards.
  • Blake Baker (Louisiana Tech): He completes 68.7% of his passes with 9 touchdowns against 1 interception.
  • Jalen Mickens (Louisiana Tech): His 32 catches for 476 yards lead the Bulldogs.
  • Eli Finley (Louisiana Tech): He had 114 yards and two touchdowns against Louisiana and leads the team with 4 scoring catches.
  • Alonzo Jackson Jr. (Louisiana Tech): His 5.0 sacks and 10.0 tackles for loss anchor a front ranked eighth in havoc.
