Quick take
  • Expect UCLA to lean on its ground game while its top-ranked defense hunts a Michigan State offense that may start a freshman.
  • Michigan State's pass protection, 127th in sacks allowed, against a UCLA defense that ranks 10th in havoc.
  • Our model makes it UCLA by 15.9 with a fair total of 43.7, almost exactly where the market sits.

A quarterback room in pieces

UCLA can reach 7-0 for the first time since 2005 on Saturday, and the team standing in the way may start a quarterback who has never thrown a college pass. That is the game in short: a Michigan State offense in triage against the most efficient defense in the country.

Alessio Milivojevic was listed questionable on Wednesday's availability report with an undisclosed injury. Backup Cam Fancher is out with a knee injury. If Milivojevic can't go, true freshman Kayd Coffman is the likely replacement, and second-year Leo Hannan has also been mentioned. Michigan State hasn't issued a newer update on Milivojevic. Running back Jaziun Patterson and left tackle Ben Murawski are also questionable.

Even with Milivojevic, this offense has struggled to move. Michigan State ranks 131st in yards per play. Its explosiveness, a measure of how much damage its successful plays do, ranks 135th.

UCLA's defense ranks 1st in EPA allowed per play (expected points added, or how much each snap moves the scoreboard). Over its last three games, against Maryland, Oregon and Wisconsin, it has given up 8.3 points per game. Protection is the pressure point. Michigan State allows 2.86 sacks per game, 127th nationally. UCLA's havoc rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup, ranks 10th. The Bruins also force 3.17 takeaways per game, a brutal welcome for a quarterback making his first snaps.

Dieffenbach gets a ground game

UCLA is breaking in a quarterback of its own. Nico Iamaleava is out for the season after knee surgery, so Ty Dieffenbach makes his second start. He threw for 264 yards in his debut against Wisconsin.

He shouldn't need to carry much. UCLA runs for 231 yards per game, 11th nationally. It ranks 12th in line yards per carry, a measure of the push its offensive line creates. Wayne Knight has 571 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

The caveat is that the offense has cooled. Its success rate (share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) over the last three games is 38.5%, below its season mark of 45.3%. Michigan State's defense hasn't been the fix, allowing 31.0 points per game over its last three.

The Spartans' secondary is thin. Cornerbacks Tre Bell, Tyran Chappell, Charles Brantley and Keshawn Williams are out, along with linebacker Jordan Hall, and the pass defense already ranks 108th in EPA allowed. Aidan Mizell is the shot-play threat, with 158 yards on just six catches. UCLA is missing pieces too: defensive backs Rodrick Pleasant and Tao Johnson and receiver Mikey Matthews are out.

Schedules and hidden yards

UCLA's unbeaten record came against a softer slate. Its FBS opponents carry an average SP+ rating of 1.5. Michigan State's opponents average 7.8. Still, the Bruins won at Oregon as 10.5-point underdogs, and they have covered every game this season.

Field position tilts toward UCLA, which ranks 3rd in average starting field position. Michigan State's punter pushes back, and its net punting ranks 4th. What the Spartans can't do is flip possessions: they rank 137th in takeaways per game.

Michigan State's one clear edge is discipline. UCLA ranks 133rd in penalty yards per game, while the Spartans rank 7th. They have also played closer than their record, losing 38-37 to Illinois and then covering at home against Northwestern.

Where our number sits

UCLA opened at -13.5 and has moved to -15. The total sits at 43.5.

Our model agrees with the move. It makes UCLA a 15.9-point favorite with an 84% chance to win. Its fair total of 43.7 is essentially the market's. For the first half, our number makes UCLA a 7.4-point favorite.

The likely script fits a correlated angle. UCLA projects for 212 rushing yards. In our testing, favorites that cover tend to clear their rushing lines too, and the underdog's passing tends to stay under.
