California Golden Bears vs SMU Mustangs prediction: Cal can't run the ball, and SMU's pass rush knows it
With no ground game and an unsettled quarterback room, Cal has to throw into one of the ACC's most disruptive fronts, a year after stealing this game in the final minute.
| Spread | SMU -18.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 55.5 |
- SMU should control the line of scrimmage on both sides, with Kendrick Raphael working a soft Cal run defense while the Mustangs' rush hunts a one-dimensional offense.
- SMU's front against Cal's protection: the Mustangs rank 16th in havoc, and Cal ranks 122nd in havoc allowed.
- Our model makes SMU a 19-point favorite with a 55 total, right on the market. No full-game edge.
Nowhere to hide on the ground
Last year Cal beat SMU 38-35 on a 75-yard touchdown drive in the final minute. Repeating that requires an offense that can do more than one thing, and the Bears can't run the ball.
Cal averages 90.3 rushing yards per game, 136th of 138 FBS teams. Its line yards per carry (the push blockers create before a back is touched) sit at 2.41, 135th. That leaves the Bears in long-yardage passing downs, which is exactly where SMU wants them.
The Mustangs' havoc rate (share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or breakup) is 19.8%, 16th nationally. Cal's havoc allowed is 17.9%, 122nd. SMU averages 3.0 sacks per game, 13th, and Marques White has all 4.5 of his sacks in the last three games. On third down, SMU allows conversions just 26.5% of the time, fourth in the country.
A quarterback room in flux
Tosh Lupoi hasn't named a starter. Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele suffered a concussion against UNLV and missed the Virginia Tech win, and Jackson Brousseau started the past two games. Neither quarterback is on the injury report. Sagapolutele came on in the third quarter of the 41-7 loss to Wake Forest and completed 15 of 18 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown, so he looks like the likely starter.
The scheme is unsettled too. Lupoi took play-calling away from coordinator Jordan Somerville at halftime of the UNLV loss and handed it to passing game coordinator Pat McCann. The results haven't changed much. Over the last three games Cal's offense has posted -0.097 EPA (expected points added) per play with a 34.8% success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule).
The skill group is thin. Adam Mohammed hasn't played since he was hurt early against UNLV, which leaves Ashten Emory at 3.5 yards per carry. Ian Strong was a late scratch against Wake Forest and is still being monitored.
Raphael's soft landing spot
SMU's identity runs through Kevin Jennings, who is completing 72.9% of his passes at 9.7 yards per attempt. The Mustangs rank 10th in passing EPA per play. Cal's pass defense is middling, though, at 53rd in passing EPA allowed. The bigger opening is on the ground.
Cal allows 0.223 EPA per rush, 132nd nationally, and gives up 181.1 rushing yards per game. That suits Kendrick Raphael, who has 542 yards at 5.5 per carry and ran for 124 against Virginia last time out. One caveat: SMU's own line yards per carry are 2.77, 119th, so the Mustangs haven't always moved people. With backup Dramekco Green ruled out, Raphael should get the bulk of the work.
Our projection has SMU rushing for 176 yards. That ties into one tested pattern: when a favorite covers, its rushing goes over its line 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated. If SMU's ground game gets going, the spread and Raphael's rushing tend to move together.
Where the number sits
The line opened at SMU -17.5 and has moved to 19. Our model lands at the same spot, with a fair total of 55 against a market of 55.5 and an 89% SMU win probability. At halftime our numbers have SMU by 11, with a first-half total of 28.2.
The market has been tough on both teams. SMU is 1-3-2 against the spread, failing to cover as a 30.5-point favorite against Missouri State and as a 21.5-point favorite against Boston College. Cal is 2-5 against the spread. The Bears have faced the tougher slate, with an average opponent SP+ of 5.8 against SMU's 0.9.
Field position is another quiet edge. SMU starts drives at its own 33.4 on average, sixth nationally, while Cal starts at its 26.5, 120th. Neither kicker inspires much confidence: SMU is 6/10 on field goals, and Cal's Nick Reed is questionable.
Key players
- Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (California): The likely but unconfirmed starter is completing 67.0% of his passes with 9 touchdowns and 5 interceptions this season.
- Chase Hendricks (California): Cal's volume receiver leads the team with 47 catches for 415 yards.
- Ashten Emory (California): With Mohammed out, Emory carries the load at 3.5 yards per carry but has 4 rushing touchdowns.
- AJ Tuitele (California): Cal's top pass rusher has 3.0 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss.
- Kevin Jennings (SMU): Jennings has thrown 16 touchdowns at 9.7 yards per attempt.
- Kendrick Raphael (SMU): Raphael has 542 rushing yards at 5.5 per carry and faces a run defense ranked 132nd in rushing EPA allowed.
- Marques White (SMU): White has 4.5 sacks over his last three games, including 3.0 against Boston College.
- Yamir Knight (SMU): SMU's leading receiver has 35 catches for 418 yards.
Numbers that matter
| Cal rushing offense | 136th | At 90.3 yards per game, Cal is one of the least productive running teams in FBS. |
|---|---|---|
| SMU havoc rate | 19.8% | Ranked 16th, it targets a Cal offense that is 122nd in havoc allowed. |
| Cal rushing EPA allowed | 0.223 | Ranked 132nd, it is the softest spot SMU's run game will see. |
| SMU third-down defense | 26.5% | Fourth nationally, a problem for an offense that can't stay ahead of the sticks. |
| Line movement | -17.5 | SMU opened there and has been bet to 19, matching our fair number. |
