BYU Cougars vs UCF Knights prediction: Bear Bachmeier's legs carry No. 2 BYU into a windy Orlando test

BYU's offense has cooled against better opponents, so the matchup that matters is its quarterback-led run game against one of the Big 12's sturdier run defenses.

Quick take
  • BYU grinds out a lower-scoring win on the ground and on third down, while UCF chases chunk plays and tries to finish drives.
  • Bachmeier and BYU's front against a UCF run defense ranked 20th in rushing EPA allowed.
  • Our number makes BYU a 7.45-point favorite, slightly more than the market's 6.5, with the total right at 43.5.

The run game decides it

BYU is 6-0 for the third consecutive season, a first in program history, and it arrives in Orlando as the highest-ranked opponent ever to visit UCF's home stadium. For UCF, at 3-3, this is about staying on the bowl path. The Knights need to win three of their final four games to get there.

BYU's offense starts on the ground. The Cougars rank 3rd in rushing EPA (expected points added per play) and 11th in line yards per carry at 3.49, a measure of how much push the offensive line creates. That front also protects well: BYU allows 0.5 sacks per game, 5th in the country.

The problem for BYU is that UCF's defense is built to absorb this. The Knights rank 20th in rushing EPA allowed and 20th in line yards allowed, at 2.53 per carry. Strip away the run and BYU has to lean on a passing game that ranks 87th in yards per game.

There is also a trend. BYU's season success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, sits at 50.9%, 8th nationally. Over its last three games against TCU, Iowa State and Notre Dame, it dropped to 42.2%. The defense has carried the load, allowing 14.7 points per game in that stretch.

Bachmeier is the offense

Bachmeier earned AP National Player of the Week after the 28-24 win over Notre Dame, a game that ended in controversy. The Big 12 has since admitted an officiating error on the finish. Over his last three games he has run for 220 yards and 4 touchdowns, and his legs bailed BYU out at TCU, where he passed for only 62 yards.

That makes him the key to BYU's third-down success. The Cougars convert 56.5% of third downs, 3rd nationally, and UCF ranks 80th at stopping them. BYU also cashes in, scoring 5.05 points per scoring opportunity, 3rd in FBS.

The backfield behind him is unsettled. Running back Sione Moa is off the injury report, and offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said, "We're still evaluating [Sione], but he is cleared to play." Offensive lineman Kyle Sfarcioc is questionable. LJ Martin averages 7.8 yards per carry this season, but he has not appeared in BYU's game logs since the TCU game.

Jenkins against a stingy defense

UCF expects Keyone Jenkins to make his fifth straight start, with Alonza Barnett III reportedly not starting as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Coordinator Steve Cooper said "AB is getting closer every day," and Scott Frost called Barnett's availability uncertain. There has been no update since Tuesday.

Jenkins has been accurate, completing 74.2% of his passes over his last three games, but UCF struggles to stay on schedule. The Knights rank 105th in line yards and 107th on third down. BYU allows only 86.2 rushing yards per game, 8th nationally, which pushes the game onto Jenkins.

UCF's best trait is finishing drives. It ranks 5th in points per scoring opportunity, so UCF does not need many trips inside the 40 to stay within a touchdown. Its defense has slipped, though: over its last three games, opponents had a 46.9% success rate against it.

Rest, wind and returns

UCF comes off a bye with 14 days of rest, against BYU's 7. The Knights also played Oklahoma State even at halftime before losing 42-28.

Wind is forecast at 17.3 mph, which can shorten deep throws and kicks. That suits BYU's run-first approach more than UCF's chunk-play offense, which ranks 38th in explosiveness.

Kick returns are a hidden edge both ways. BYU averages 37.2 yards per kick return, 2nd nationally, but allows 28.5 per return, 129th. UCF returns kicks well too, ranking 13th, and its kick coverage ranks 11th.

The market drifts toward UCF

The line opened at UCF +9.5 and has moved to +6.5 across 28 books, all toward the home underdog. Our model sits at BYU by 7.45, slightly more BYU-friendly than the current number, and gives UCF a 32% chance to win. Our total of 43.5 matches the market exactly.

BYU has covered every game this season. That includes the Notre Dame win as a 10.5-point underdog. BYU won last season's meeting 41-21. For the first half, our number makes BYU a 4.3-point favorite with a total of 22.75.
