Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 24, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Buffalo leans on Messiah Burch and grinds a low-scoring MAC game while Bowling Green's improving passing attack tries to keep pace.
  • Burch against a Bowling Green run defense allowing 209.6 rushing yards per game, 132nd of 138.
  • Our model makes Buffalo a 4-point favorite with a 44.5 total, a point more on Buffalo than the market's 3.

Burch against a soft front

Buffalo throws Senior Day festivities around a game with real MAC stakes: both teams enter 2-1 in league play. Bowling Green arrives still stinging from an overtime loss to Ball State decided by a two-point conversion, a game it led 24-17 with 1:01 left. Buffalo has the clearest path to points in this matchup, and it runs straight through its tailback.

Bowling Green allows 209.6 rushing yards per game, 132nd of 138 FBS teams. The problem starts up front. The Falcons give up 3.34 line yards per carry (a measure of how much push an offensive line gets on running plays), 129th nationally. Opponents stay on schedule against them constantly: their success rate allowed, the share of plays that keep an offense ahead of the chains, sits at 46.9%, 128th.

Messiah Burch is the player built to exploit that. He has 415 yards over his last three games at 6.1 per carry, capped by 172 yards on 28 carries in the overtime win over UMass. His backup, Nino Hill, averages 2.9 per carry, so expect Buffalo to keep feeding Burch. Our projection has the Bulls at 184 rushing yards.

Wright's arm is the brake

The reason Buffalo leans so hard on Burch is the passing game. Jason Wright, the sophomore who has started the Bulls' recent games, completes 48.2% of his passes at 5.2 yards per attempt. Buffalo averages 4.35 yards per play overall, 136th in the country.

Bowling Green's defense is better built to stop that half of the offense. The Falcons hold opponents to 174.3 passing yards per game, 26th, though some of that reflects teams simply running on them. Their pass rush is real: Bowling Green averages 2.57 sacks per game, 24th, while Buffalo allows 2.43 per game, 105th. Myles Bradley has 7 sacks in six games. If Bowling Green can stuff Burch on early downs, its 32.0% third-down conversion rate allowed, 24th nationally, becomes a weapon against a quarterback who struggles to finish drives through the air.

Wright did deliver when it counted last week, throwing the 15-yard overtime touchdown to Clint Walker that beat UMass.

Kastantin's surge, with a caveat

Bowling Green's offense has woken up. Over the last three games, Jay Kastantin has completed 69.7% of his passes at 8.4 yards per attempt, with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He threw for 305 yards in the win at Miami (OH). The team's success rate over that stretch is 47.4%, well above its season mark of 38.9%, which ranks 116th.

The schedule explains part of the jump. Two of those three games came against Sacramento State and Ball State, rated 138th and 132nd in SP+. Buffalo's opponents have been tougher on average, posting a -1.0 SP+ against -5.4 for Bowling Green's.

The Falcons still can't run (their rushing EPA, expected points added per play, ranks 134th), and they stall near the goal line at 2.33 points per scoring opportunity, 131st. Buffalo's pass defense, allowing 229.3 yards per game (97th), is the softer target. The receiver room is thin: A. Clay is out for the season, I. Dawson is out indefinitely, and T. Johnson was questionable as of Oct 17, with no update since. RB T. Blackmon carried the same questionable tag.

Field position tilts Buffalo's way

In a game the market prices this tight, hidden yards can swing it. Bowling Green nets 33.6 yards per punt, 134th of 136. Buffalo nets 42.1, 42nd. The Bulls also smother kick returns, allowing 9.6 yards per return, second in the country. Over a full afternoon of punts, Buffalo's offense should start with shorter fields, which matters for a unit that struggles to sustain long drives.

The market and our number

Buffalo opened as a 3-point favorite and hasn't moved across 26 books, with the total at 44.5. Our model sees Buffalo by 4, projecting a 24.2-20.3 final and giving the Bulls a 60% chance to win. The model matches the market on the total exactly. For the first half, it makes Buffalo a 3.2-point favorite.

One tested pattern fits this game: when favorites cover, their rushing yards tend to go over the line as well. If Buffalo wins this the way its roster suggests it should, Burch's carries are the reason. Buffalo has also shown it can win as an underdog, beating Toledo 23-8 as a 19-point dog.

One scheduling note: both schools list a 3:30 PM ET kickoff, though one TV listing shows 7:30 PM.
