Boston College Eagles vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets prediction: Georgia Tech's injury-gutted front gives Boston College's shaky line a reprieve
Boston College protects its quarterback worse than almost anyone, and Georgia Tech will try to exploit that without most of its pass rushers.
| Spread | Georgia Tech -6.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 50.5 |
- Georgia Tech should move the ball through the air, but a depleted defense gives Boston College's quarterback-run attack a real chance to stay close.
- Mason McKenzie's legs against a Georgia Tech front missing Noah Carter, Tawfiq Thomas and three more defensive linemen.
- Our model makes Georgia Tech a 5.3-point favorite, close to the market's 4.5, with a 49.9 total.
A pass rush gone missing
Bill O'Brien coached offense at Georgia Tech from 1995 to 2002, and he returns to Atlanta with a team coming off a comeback win. "(Georgia Tech) meant a lot to my career," he said. The Yellow Jackets, playing their homecoming game, have dropped seven of their past nine and will take the field without much of their defense.
The out list is long, and the defensive line takes the worst of it. Noah Carter had 3.0 sacks over his last three games and is out. So is Tawfiq Thomas, who leads the team with 7.5 tackles for loss. Defensive end A.J. Hoffler and tackles Shymeik Jones and Landen Marshall are out too, and so are cornerbacks Daiquan White and Jaedyn Terry plus defensive backs Fenix Felton and Will Kiker.
That is a gift to Boston College's offensive line. The Eagles allow havoc (plays with a tackle for loss, sack, fumble forced, interception or pass breakup) on 19.0% of snaps, 131st in the country. They give up 2.67 sacks per game, 116th. A healthy Tech front would have had a clear target. This one ranked only 85th in havoc rate before the injuries piled up, and its pass defense already sat 125th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per dropback).
McKenzie is the run game
Boston College will also play shorthanded. Running back Evan Dickens (leg) has been ruled out, which shifts carries to Bo MacCormack III. MacCormack has managed 49 yards on 22 carries over the last three games, and the blocking explains part of it: BC's offensive line produces 2.65 line yards per carry (the rushing yardage credited to the line), 128th nationally.
So the ground game runs through Mason McKenzie. The quarterback has 444 rushing yards this season and ran for 138 against Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech allows 179.0 rushing yards per game, 109th, and it just lost bodies up front.
McKenzie's risk is the ball. He has thrown 7 interceptions to go with 7 touchdown passes. Tech's defense has rarely made opponents pay, averaging 0.5 takeaways per game, 133rd. When McKenzie does push it downfield, BC's explosiveness ranks 28th, and Landon Wright turned two catches into 122 yards against Pitt.
Mendoza against a stingy secondary
Alberto Mendoza is the reason Tech is favored. He completes 71.2% of his passes and set a career high with 335 yards at Virginia Tech. Jordan Allen caught 10 passes in each of the last two games.
Boston College's pass defense is better at limiting yardage than efficiency. The Eagles allow 169.3 passing yards per game, 17th, yet rank 79th in passing EPA allowed. They force 1.83 takeaways per game, 16th, and they rank 20th with 6.83 tackles for loss per game. That last number matters because Tech is without left tackle Ethan Mackenny and lineman Markell Samuel.
The Jackets' backfield gives them a second path. Justice Haynes is off the injury report and expected to start, though that isn't fully confirmed, and he averages 5.3 yards per carry. Trelain Maddox has scored 5 rushing touchdowns over the last three games.
Hidden yards and the number
Field position tilts toward Tech. Boston College's net punting average of 32.8 ranks last in the country, while Georgia Tech's kick returns average 29.5 yards, 10th. The Jackets give some back with penalties, at 70.5 yards per game (115th).
The Eagles have been the better bet. They are 4-2 against the spread and covered all three games as an underdog against Virginia Tech, SMU and Pitt, while Tech is 1-5. Boston College also played a tougher schedule, with an average opponent SP+ of 6.5 against Tech's 4.1. Tech lost outright at Stanford, a team ranked 114th in SP+.
The line opened Georgia Tech -5 and has moved to -4.5, with the total at 50. Our model has Tech by 5.3 and a 49.9 total, essentially where the market sits. If Tech covers, the likeliest path is on the ground: covering favorites tend to go over their rushing lines.
Key players
- Mason McKenzie (Boston College): His 444 rushing yards make him the Eagles' run game with Evan Dickens out.
- Bo MacCormack III (Boston College): Takes over the backfield after managing 49 yards on 22 carries over the last three games.
- Landon Wright (Boston College): The deep threat turned two catches into 122 yards and a touchdown against Pitt.
- Demetrius Ballard (Boston College): Has 3.5 sacks over his last three games against a Tech line missing its left tackle.
- Alberto Mendoza (Georgia Tech): Completing 71.2% of his passes, with a career-high 335 yards in his last game.
- Jordan Allen (Georgia Tech): Caught 10 passes in each of the last two games, for 99 and 120 yards.
- Trelain Maddox (Georgia Tech): Averaging 7.8 yards per carry with 5 touchdowns over the last three games.
- Justice Haynes (Georgia Tech): Expected back as the starter, averaging 5.3 yards per carry this season.
Numbers that matter
| BC havoc allowed | 19.0% | 131st nationally, a weakness Tech's injury-thinned front is poorly placed to exploit. |
|---|---|---|
| GT passing EPA allowed | 0.37 | 125th nationally, before losing four defensive backs to injury. |
| BC line yards per carry | 2.65 | 128th, which pushes the run game onto McKenzie with Dickens out. |
| BC net punting | 32.8 | Last of 136 teams, handing Tech's 10th-ranked kick return unit a field-position edge. |
| GT takeaways per game | 0.5 | 133rd, so McKenzie's interception habit may go unpunished. |
