Western Illinois vs Houston Christian prediction: Houston Christian's shot-blockers greet a Western Illinois team still digging out
Last season the Leathernecks finished near the bottom of Division I at scoring inside, and the Huskies made opponents pay at the rim, so the Nov. 7 opener tests whether Western Illinois has changed anything.
- Houston Christian brings last season's far stronger profile; Western Illinois needs real offensive improvement to keep this within reach.
- Western Illinois's interior scoring, 358th in 2-point percentage last season, against a Houston Christian defense that ranked 78th in block rate.
- No spread or total posted yet; last season's adjusted net ratings had Houston Christian 289th and Western Illinois 364th of 365.
A long way back
Western Illinois went 5-26 last season, and the underlying numbers were worse than the record. The Leathernecks closed with an adjusted net efficiency of -30.2, meaning they were outscored by about 30 points per 100 possessions once schedule strength is factored in. That ranked 364th of 365. Chad Boudreau, promoted from interim head coach in April 2023, opens another season trying to lift that floor.
Houston Christian was no juggernaut at 12-20, but its adjusted net of -11.5 ranked 289th, a different tier entirely. Craig Doty, hired from Emporia State in March 2024, runs the Huskies. All of these figures are last season's, and both rosters have turned over, so treat them as a starting point rather than a forecast.
Where the offense broke
The Leathernecks could not finish. They made 44.8% of their twos last season, 358th nationally, and the outside shot offered no rescue at 31.4% from three. Their assist rate, the share of made baskets that came off a pass, was 37.0%, dead last in Division I. That describes an offense living on contested one-on-one looks.
Houston Christian's defense is built to punish exactly that. The Huskies blocked 11.2% of opponents' two-point tries, 78th in the country. If Western Illinois still settles for isolation drives, the Huskies' length gets the first word.
Turnovers in a slow game
Neither team pushes the pace. Western Illinois played at 66.1 possessions per 40 minutes last season, and Houston Christian was slower at 65. Fewer possessions put more weight on each wasted trip.
That edge leans toward the Huskies. Houston Christian forced turnovers on 18.1% of opponent possessions, 112th nationally, while Western Illinois coughed it up on 17.6% of its own. The catch is Houston Christian's ball security: its 19.1% turnover rate ranked 321st, a habit that could hand the Leathernecks the cheap points they struggle to create in the half court.
New faces, unsettled details
Houston Christian's roster lists several players arriving with prior Division I stops, including Chris Mubiru (Northwestern State), Bubz Alvarez (South Dakota State) and Shawn Simmons II (Saint Joseph's and UMass Lowell). Western Illinois lists freshman Shay Stephens alongside Davee Flowers, Jack Riley and Hunter Vaughn. Expected starters for either side haven't been announced, and no injury or eligibility news has surfaced for either team.
Even the setting is unsettled. The game is listed as a neutral-site meeting, but other listings place it in Canton, Ill., or at Western Hall. The two teams meet again Nov. 30 at Houston Christian.
