Northern Illinois vs Dayton prediction: Dayton's turnover pressure awaits a Northern Illinois team starting over
Last season the Flyers forced turnovers and lived at the line, while the Huskies gave the ball away more than almost anyone, and a new coach inherits that problem.
- Dayton should control this with defense, steals and free throws, unless a rebuilt Northern Illinois roster has fixed last season's ball-handling problems.
- Dayton's ball pressure against Northern Illinois' ball security: last season the Flyers forced turnovers at the 17th-best rate while the Huskies ranked 357th protecting it.
- No line is posted yet. Last season's final adjusted net ratings, Dayton 69th and Northern Illinois 335th, show the gap a spread will have to cover.
Possessions are the whole story
Anthony Grant's ninth Dayton team opens the season as the Atlantic 10's third pick, and its second home game brings in a Northern Illinois program that has just changed coaches. The clearest edge between them last season came before anyone took a shot.
Dayton forced turnovers on 21.0% of opponent possessions in 2025-26, 17th of 365 nationally, and its steal rate ranked 35th. Northern Illinois coughed it up on 21.4% of its own trips, 357th. A team that wastes one possession in five against a defense built to take the ball away can be out of a game by the second media timeout.
The caveat is real. Matt Majkrzak is in his first season after replacing Rashon Burno, and the roster has been reshuffled. Quentin Jones left for Saint Louis, and Uzziah Buntyn (South Dakota), David Douglas Jr. (Fresno State), Brayden Gross and Cal Klesmit arrived as transfers. Last season's turnover numbers describe a team that partly no longer exists.
Dayton lives at the line
The Flyers drew fouls like few teams in the country. Their free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 46.2% last season, 2nd in Division I, and they made 75.4% of those attempts, 67th. Northern Illinois' defense ranked 248th in opponent free throw rate, so it put teams on the line often.
The Huskies can get there too: their own free throw rate ranked 91st. The problem was finishing. They made 66.4% from the stripe, 352nd, which turns trips to the line into wasted possessions.
Threes are the Huskies' path
Northern Illinois took threes on 45.0% of its shots last season, 68th-most in the country, but made only 31.2% of them, 321st. Its inside game offered no relief, with two-point shooting ranked 282nd, and Dayton's shot-blocking ranked 52nd.
The opening is the perimeter. Dayton's defense allowed opponents to hit 35.4% from three last season, 294th nationally, the one soft spot on a unit that finished 29th in last season's final adjusted defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). If the newcomers shoot better than last season's Huskies, this tightens.
Dayton has a vulnerability of its own on the glass. The Flyers grabbed just 26.9% of their misses, 313th, so second chances may be scarce for both sides.
Who is healthy for Dayton
Preseason first-team pick Amaël L'Etang returns alongside Jaiun Simon, and the Flyers added Travis Perry, Tristian Ford and Zaide Lowery as transfers. They beat Notre Dame 75-65 in an exhibition Oct. 17.
Simon missed a later exhibition with a concussion he said happened at practice; around Oct. 21 he said he expected to be ready that week. Newcomer Jalen Haynes has had two knee surgeries in eight months, and Dayton hasn't given an update on him since late spring. Jaron McKie, who missed last season after shoulder surgery, is expected back.
Both teams play their openers Nov. 2, Dayton at home against NJIT and Northern Illinois against Grambling in Rock Hill, S.C., so each will have one game of real tape before this one.
What to watch
- Early turnovers. If the Huskies are giving it away at last season's pace, Dayton's transition game takes over.
- Northern Illinois' three-point volume. It is their best route to staying close against a Dayton defense that let opponents shoot well from deep.
- Simon and Haynes. Their availability shapes Dayton's depth in the opening weeks.
