Utah Valley vs Weber State prediction: Utah Valley's veteran machine tests Weber State's brand-new roster in Ogden

Kaleb Canales opens his first home regular season with 12 new players against the Utah Valley program that has won the last three meetings.

Quick take
  • Utah Valley brings continuity and a ball-hawking defense against a young Weber State roster still learning one another under a first-year coach.
  • Weber State's new guards, led by freshman Gavin Lowe, against a Utah Valley defense that ranked 6th nationally in forced turnover rate last season.
  • No spread or total is posted yet; last season's adjusted net ranks, 90th for Utah Valley and 194th for Weber State, set the early gap.

Twelve new faces in Ogden

Weber State has rarely looked this unfamiliar. Kaleb Canales, hired April 3 as the program's 11th head coach in place of Eric Duft, has 12 new players, nine of them Division I transfers. Only ArDarius Grayson and Declan Cutler return, and the Wildcats lost all five starters from a team that went 16-16 last season. The roster ranks among the youngest in the country.

That makes last season's numbers a weak guide for Saturday's home opener, the first of 15 games at the Dee Events Center. Big Sky coaches and media both picked Weber State 8th. Freshman Gavin Lowe started at point guard in the Oct. 24 exhibition win over Westminster, a game the Wildcats pulled away in only after a close first half. The real read on this group starts here.

A defense that takes the ball

Utah Valley arrives with the opposite profile: a settled program under fourth-year coach Todd Phillips, who was extended through 2029-30. The Wolverines went 25-9 last season, won a second straight outright WAC regular-season title and reached the NIT. They now play in the Big West, which picked them fifth in its preseason poll, though another published ranking had them second.

The identity was chaos. Utah Valley forced turnovers on 22.5% of opponent possessions last season, 6th of 365, and also ranked 6th in steal rate. That is a hard welcome for a freshman point guard in his first regular-season game. The catch: the Wolverines were just as loose with the ball themselves, turning it over on 20.6% of possessions, 354th nationally. Weber State's new backcourt can steal possessions back if it stays patient.

One piece is gone. Jackson Holcombe, a three-year Wolverine, transferred to Utah.

Size and the paint

The clearest physical edge belongs to the visitors. Utah Valley's minutes-weighted average height is 78.4 inches against Weber State's 76.3. Last season that size showed up everywhere near the rim: the Wolverines made 58.1% of their twos, 24th nationally, and blocked 14.7% of opponent two-point attempts, 11th.

Weber State's interior defense was the weak spot of the Duft era's final year, with opponents shooting 56.5% inside the arc, 344th. Those were different players, but the Wildcats are the smaller team again, at 76.3 inches against 78.4. Utah Valley also grabbed 36.5% of its own misses last season, 25th nationally, so second chances could pile up if Weber State's new frontcourt doesn't box out.

Rivalry form and availability

Utah Valley has won three straight in this series. The Wolverines won 70-54 and 90-74 at home, and the one trip to Ogden was tight, a 64-62 win in December 2024. This is the first of two straight road games for Utah Valley, with a trip to Nevada on Nov. 14.

Neither team's preseason was spotless. Utah Valley lost 92-80 at Utah Tech in an Oct. 17 exhibition. Weber State's concerns are about bodies: Grayson, one of two returners, sat out the Westminster exhibition for what Canales called "team rules," and a player identified only as Jackson iced his knee in that game. As of Oct. 24, Canales hoped it was nothing long-term but was awaiting word from the training staff.

What to watch

  • Weber State's turnover count in the first 10 minutes against Utah Valley's pressure.
  • Whether Grayson is back in the starting lineup.
  • Utah Valley's offensive rebounding against a smaller Wildcats front line.
