Western Carolina vs UNC Asheville prediction: Western Carolina's rebounding muscle faces a rebuilt test at Kimmel Arena

Last season the Catamounts owned the glass and UNC Asheville lived at the line, but a heavily remade Western Carolina roster makes that history a loose guide.

Quick take
  • Expect a physical rivalry game where second chances and free throws decide two teams that finished last season nearly level.
  • Western Carolina's offensive rebounding, 23rd nationally last season, against an Asheville front line that was middle of the pack.
  • No line is posted yet. Last season's final adjusted net ratings had the teams close, 228th and 233rd.

Second chances for the Catamounts

The mountain rivalry resumes in Asheville with two programs that finished last season in nearly the same place. Western Carolina closed with an adjusted net rating (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) that ranked 228th nationally, and UNC Asheville ranked 233rd. When the gap is that thin, the extra possession matters.

That is where Western Carolina built its identity last season. The Catamounts grabbed 36.7% of their own misses, 23rd nationally, and finished 17th in defensive rebound rate. Asheville's offensive rebounding sat 174th. If that profile survives the offseason, Western Carolina gets more shots than the home team.

The caveat is large. Tim Craft, entering his third season, has a roster of four returning players, eight transfers and four freshmen. Last season's rebounding numbers belong partly to players who are gone, so treat them as a starting point, not a forecast.

Free throws cut both ways

Asheville's best offensive habit last season was getting to the line. Its free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 39.4%, 65th nationally. Western Carolina's defense put opponents at the line too often, ranking 285th in opponent free throw rate.

The problem for the Bulldogs was cashing in. They made just 68.7% of their free throws, 306th nationally. A whistle-heavy game favors Asheville's style, but only if the misses don't hand the points back.

Open looks for Asheville

Western Carolina's defense struggled most on the perimeter last season. Opponents shot 36.2% from three, which ranked 330th nationally, and the Catamounts' opponent effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) ranked 318th.

Asheville didn't hunt threes, ranking 271st in 3-point attempt rate, but it made them at a 34.9% clip. Whether Mike Morrell's group leans into the arc more against this defense is a question worth watching early.

Rivalry and a tough tune-up

Asheville's August schedule release labeled Western Carolina a longtime mountain rival and one of its marquee home games. The Bulldogs won the last meeting at Kimmel Arena 78-61 on Dec. 14, 2024. On Dec. 9, 2023, Western Carolina won 78-63 at home in Cullowhee.

The Catamounts head to North Carolina on Nov. 2 before this game, the first leg of a two-game road swing that ends in Asheville. Asheville was picked fifth in the Big South preseason poll. No injuries, suspensions or eligibility issues had surfaced for either team as of this week.

The game is listed for 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 7, though Asheville's August schedule graphic showed a 2 p.m. tip, so confirm the time closer to the game.

Numbers that matter

WCU offensive rebound rate, last season36.7%Ranked 23rd nationally, the Catamounts' clearest edge if the rebuilt roster keeps it.
UNCA free throw rate, last season39.4%Ranked 65th, against a Western Carolina defense that ranked 285th at keeping teams off the line.
UNCA free throw percentage, last season68.7%Ranked 306th, which blunts the value of all those trips to the line.
WCU opponent 3-point percentage, last season36.2%Ranked 330th, the softest part of the Catamounts' defense.
