UNC Wilmington vs East Carolina prediction: East Carolina's broken jumper faces UNC Wilmington's suffocating perimeter defense

ECU rebuilt with five newcomers after one of the country's worst shooting seasons, and its first test is the CAA favorite's elite three-point defense.

Quick take
  • UNC Wilmington should control this if ECU's rebuilt roster still can't shoot; the Seahawks also hold a clear edge on the offensive glass.
  • ECU's new perimeter shooters against a UNCW defense that held opponents to 29.8% from three last season, ninth nationally.
  • No line has been posted yet. Last season's adjusted net efficiency ranks, 104th for UNCW and 259th for ECU, frame the gap.

Where ECU's offense broke down

East Carolina could not make shots last season, and its first marquee home game comes against a defense built to keep it that way. UNC Wilmington arrives as the preseason CAA favorite with a 27-7 season behind it. ECU went 11-20 and has rebuilt around five newcomers.

The Pirates' effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 makes, was 46.4% last season. That ranked 353rd of 365. The three-point shot was the worst of it: ECU hit 28.8%, 361st nationally, and rarely tried it, ranking 337th in three-point attempt rate.

That profile runs straight into UNCW's strength. The Seahawks held opponents to 29.8% from deep last season, ninth in the country. Their opponent effective field goal percentage of 47.1% ranked 28th. Those are last season's numbers for both teams, and roster turnover matters here: if the newcomers can't change the shooting, this matchup tilts hard toward the visitors.

Second chances for the Seahawks

UNCW's offense was built on volume more than accuracy. The Seahawks made 49.8% of their twos last season, just 288th nationally, but they rebounded 36.0% of their own misses, 36th in the country.

ECU struggled to finish defensive possessions last season. The Pirates' defensive rebound rate of 67.7% ranked 294th. Size backs up the mismatch: UNCW's minutes-weighted average height is 79.0 inches, against 76.1 for ECU.

One soft spot for the Seahawks is the free-throw line. They shot 68.3% there last season, 316th nationally, which could matter if ECU hangs around late.

New faces on both benches

Takayo Siddle, in his sixth season at UNCW, brings back six players from last year's roster, including Gavin Walsh and Jahnathan Lamothe. The headliner is Wessler, the preseason CAA player of the year. Luster, who missed last season with an injury, is back on the court. The incoming transfers include Xavier Brown from South Florida, Treyvon Maddox from Miami and William Kermoury from Northeastern.

Michael Schwartz's ECU roster looks very different. Jordan Riley left for the NBA. In his place come Brycen Blaine from Charleston Southern, Kaden Cooper from Louisiana Tech, Kaseem Watson from UTEP, Maxim Klitschko from AS Monaco and Dreylan Creasy-Quirindongo. One preseason ranking of the American picked the Pirates 10th.

Last season's adjusted efficiency ratings, which measure points per 100 possessions adjusted for opponents, put UNCW 104th and ECU 259th. With this much roster churn, especially in Greenville, those numbers are a starting point rather than a verdict.

An in-state series turning

This is one of two in-state non-conference home games on ECU's schedule, and the recent history favors the visitors. ECU won the 2023 meeting at home. UNCW has taken the two since, including a 67-53 win at Minges Coliseum in December 2024. Last November in Wilmington, the Seahawks won 85-60.

What to watch:

- Whether ECU's transfers give the Pirates a credible three-point threat against UNCW's perimeter defense. UNCW's offensive rebounding against a Pirates team that ranked 294th in defensive rebound rate last season. - Wessler's first major road test as the CAA's preseason headliner.

Numbers that matter

ECU 3-point % (last season)28.8%Ranked 361st of 365, the core problem the Pirates' transfers have to fix.
UNCW opponent 3-point % (last season)29.8%Ninth nationally, a direct threat to an offense that already struggled from deep.
UNCW offensive rebound % (last season)36.0%Ranked 36th, against an ECU defensive rebound rate that ranked 294th.
UNCW adjusted net efficiency rank (last season)104thECU finished 259th, though heavy roster change makes both a loose guide.
