Prairie View A&M vs UT Rio Grande Valley prediction: Prairie View's full-court chaos tests Brandon Chambers' rebuilt UTRGV

The Panthers bring last season's turnover-hunting, foul-drawing style to Edinburg, where a first-year coach has almost nobody back from last year's team.

Quick take
  • Expect a fast, foul-heavy game if Prairie View dictates terms, and a cleaner half-court shooting game if UTRGV's new backcourt handles the pressure.
  • Prairie View's ball pressure against UTRGV's ball handlers, nearly all of them new to the program this season.
  • No line is posted yet. Last season's final adjusted net ratings had UTRGV 124th and Prairie View 308th of 365.

A new team in old colors

UTRGV ended last season in a triple-overtime Southland semifinal loss to McNeese. Almost none of that team remains. Brandon Chambers was introduced as head coach on April 3, and only two players from last season's roster, Always Wright and Luis Ramirez, are back.

That matters for how you read the Vaqueros' numbers. Last season UTRGV went 19-14 with an effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure where threes count 1.5 times) of 55.6%, 30th in Division I, and held opponents to 47.2%, also 30th. Those were strong numbers, but they belong to players who are mostly gone. The new pieces include transfers T'Johnn Brown from McNeese, B.B. Knight from Lamar and Jace Posey from TCU, plus freshman Kaleb Corbitt. The Southland's preseason poll picked this group fifth in the league. This game is the third of three straight home games to open the season, so Chambers will have a couple of games of film on his own team before tip.

Pressure against unfamiliar hands

Prairie View's identity last season was disruption. The Panthers forced turnovers on 20.7% of opponent possessions, 23rd nationally, and played at 72.5 possessions per 40 minutes, the 12th-fastest pace in the country. UTRGV, by contrast, played at 67 possessions, 214th, and turned it over on 17.8% of its trips, 260th.

That turnover figure came from last season's guards, so it is no prediction. But a backcourt assembled over the summer is exactly the kind of group a pressing, fast team wants to see in early November. If the Panthers speed this up and pile up live-ball steals, they shrink the talent gap. If UTRGV breaks the pressure cleanly, the game slows to the pace it prefers.

Living at the line

Prairie View's other weapon is the whistle. Its free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 42.0% last season, 28th nationally, and it converted 75.7% of those attempts, 57th. UTRGV's defense allowed a 37.9% free throw rate, 275th, so last season's Vaqueros put opponents on the line often.

The flip side cuts against the Panthers. They fouled heavily too, with an opponent free throw rate that ranked 316th, and UTRGV made 76.2% of its free throws last season. A game with a parade to the line favors whichever new rotation stays out of foul trouble.

Threes against twos

The two programs built their offenses in opposite ways last season. UTRGV took 44.1% of its shots from three and made 37.4% of them, 26th in the country. Prairie View's 3-point attempt rate of 30.5% ranked 348th; it attacked the paint and made only 48.6% of its twos, 321st.

Prairie View's offense was its weak point. Its adjusted offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) finished last season at 100.7, 310th. The Panthers also cleaned only 66.4% of opponent misses, 327th, a soft spot for any UTRGV lineup that crashes the glass. A new Vaqueros roster may not shoot like last year's, but if Chambers keeps the spacing-heavy approach, Prairie View's thin rebounding gives UTRGV second chances.

What Prairie View brings back

The Panthers arrive off a 67-55 First Four win over Lehigh for their first NCAA Tournament victory, followed by a 59-point loss to No. 1 seed Florida. They finished 19-18 under longtime coach Byron Smith, and a preseason projection slots them sixth in the SWAC.

Their roster is less settled than the record suggests. Derrick Rivers, Michael Eley and Dashawn Ceaser profile as scoring options, with Alcorn transfer Davian Williams and Micah Bell from South Plains committed. Whether Jannoy Thomas remains on the roster is unconfirmed.
