Penn State-Shenango vs Mercyhurst prediction: Mercyhurst's home opener lands amid Louisville, Notre Dame and Penn State

The NEC's second-ranked preseason pick finally plays in Erie, against a Penn State branch campus wedged between power-conference trips.

Quick take
  • Mercyhurst should control a slow, low-possession game against a non-Division I visitor, with its defense setting the terms.
  • Watch the Lakers' unproven freshmen; the home opener is their first real look at minutes in Erie.
  • No line posted yet; Mercyhurst played at 64.7 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 315th of 365, which points to a slow game.

A breather in a brutal stretch

Gary Manchel's Lakers have a busy stretch before the home opener. They have an upcoming exhibition at home against Louisville on Oct. 28, then games against Marquette on Nov. 2 and Notre Dame on Nov. 5. Only then does Mercyhurst get its home opener against Penn State-Shenango, and five days later it visits the Big Ten's Nittany Lions.

That makes Saturday the calmest date on an early calendar built to test a team NEC coaches rank second in their preseason poll, with two first-place votes. Shenango, a Penn State branch campus, finished 13-13 last season. Expect Manchel to use the afternoon to settle a rotation before Penn State.

Defense carried last season

Mercyhurst went 17-17 last season and made a run in the NEC tournament, its first year eligible, that ended against Long Island. The defense drove it. The Lakers allowed 102.4 points per 100 possessions, 50th of 365, and gave up 67.4 points per game, 31st nationally.

The offense lagged at 105.8 points per 100 possessions, 288th. They also almost never got to the line: their free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) ranked 363rd of 365. Against a smaller-college opponent, those gaps matter less than the defense does. Last season's numbers are only a rough guide, because Mercyhurst's returning minutes aren't known and the roster lists freshmen Shane Kirker, Markus Maxwell-Grimes and Hunter Te Ratana.

Slow, careful and patient

The Lakers grind. Their 64.7 possessions per 40 minutes ranked 315th last season, and they turned it over on just 14.5% of possessions, 36th in the country. They also forced turnovers on 19.3% of opponent possessions, 63rd. A careful offense paired with a disruptive defense is a good recipe against a team stepping up in level. The slow pace should keep the game from turning into a track meet.
