North Dakota vs Winthrop prediction: Winthrop's tempo tests a reshaped North Dakota in Rock Hill rematch
Last December's 90-88 shootout is the only recent meeting, but both rosters have turned over, so the question is which of last season's habits made the trip into November.
- Expect a fast, foul-heavy game in which Winthrop's home floor and free-throw volume collide with North Dakota's knack for forcing turnovers.
- Winthrop's ball handlers against North Dakota's pressure: the Fighting Hawks ranked 26th in forced turnover rate last season.
- No spread or total is posted yet. Last season Winthrop played at the 17th-fastest pace in Division I, and the last meeting finished 90-88.
A shootout to build on
The last time these programs shared a floor, on Dec. 18, 2025, North Dakota won 90-88 at home. On Saturday, Nov. 7, Winthrop gets the return game in Rock Hill, and the conditions favor another high-scoring afternoon.
Winthrop pushed the ball hard last season. It averaged 72 possessions per 40 minutes, 17th of 365 Division I teams. North Dakota played closer to the middle of the pack, ranking 119th. North Dakota's defense rarely made anyone's night difficult. Opponents posted a 55.5% effective field goal percentage against the Fighting Hawks (a shooting measure in which threes count 1.5 times), which ranked 349th. Opponents also made 56.6% of their twos, 348th.
Winthrop scored 83.6 points per game last season, 24th nationally. A North Dakota defense that gave up that kind of shooting is not built to slow the game down.
Where North Dakota steals possessions
North Dakota's counterpunch was its hands. The Fighting Hawks forced turnovers on 20.6% of opponent possessions last season, 26th in the country, and their steal rate ranked 33rd. They also protected the ball themselves, ranking 26th in turnover rate.
Winthrop handled the ball well, too, with a turnover rate of 15.0% that ranked 58th. The Eagles got their extra chances on the glass instead. They rebounded 35.5% of their own misses, 44th nationally, while North Dakota ranked 234th in defensive rebounding. The net count of possessions may come down to Winthrop's offensive rebounds against North Dakota's steals.
Living at the line
The clearest edge in last season's profiles is at the free-throw line. Winthrop's free throw rate, which measures free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt, was 43.2%, 15th in Division I. North Dakota's defense allowed a rate of 43.1% to opponents, 344th. The Fighting Hawks fouled about as often as Winthrop got to the line.
Winthrop made 73.1% of its free throws last season. North Dakota made 70.4%. If the game is as close as last December's, those trips to the line could decide it.
New faces on both benches
All of the numbers above describe last season's teams, and both rosters look different now. Several Winthrop rotation regulars from 2025-26, including Kody Clouet, Kareem Rozier and Logan Duncomb, are not on this season's roster. Mark Prosser, in his fifth season, added Tai Hamilton from William & Mary and George Natsvlishvili, a senior who arrives from North Dakota. That gives the opener a reunion subplot. Spence Sims made the Big South preseason all-conference team, and the Eagles were picked third in the league after going 23-11 last season.
Paul Sather, in his seventh season at North Dakota, brought in seven transfers and four freshmen, including Luke Winkel from St. Cloud State and Tyler Wagner from Austin Peay. The Fighting Hawks went 18-17 and lost the Summit League tournament final to North Dakota State, and they were picked sixth in the Summit this fall.
Last season's final adjusted ratings, which measure points per 100 possessions adjusted for opponents, also favored Winthrop. The Eagles ranked 153rd in adjusted net efficiency, and North Dakota ranked 278th. With this much roster turnover, though, those ratings are only a loose guide. No injury news had surfaced for either team as of Oct. 25.
