North Carolina A&T vs Ohio prediction: North Carolina A&T brings its free-throw habit to Ohio's foul-prone defense

Last season the Aggies lived at the line and the Bobcats kept sending opponents there, and that collision frames a season opener with no posted line.

Quick take
  • Expect a choppy, whistle-heavy game; Ohio's ball security and home floor give the Bobcats the edge if they keep A&T off the line.
  • A&T's foul-drawing attack against an Ohio defense that ranked 263rd in opponent free throw rate last season.
  • No spread or total is posted yet; last season Ohio finished 222nd in adjusted net efficiency to A&T's 274th.

The Aggies play for whistles

North Carolina A&T's offense last season ran through the free-throw line. The Aggies posted a free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) of 45.1%, third in Division I. Few teams anywhere drew contact like that.

Ohio is a poor matchup for stopping it. The Bobcats allowed an opponent free throw rate of 37.3% last season, 263rd nationally. If that pattern holds on Nov. 7, A&T gets a steady supply of free points against a defense that already struggled to get stops.

The catch is conversion. A&T made 71.6% of its free throws last season, 220th, so all those trips don't automatically turn into a big scoring night. A close game in the final minutes would put that number under real pressure.

Open threes nobody makes

Both defenses gave up threes at an alarming clip last season. Ohio allowed opponents to hit 36.6% from deep, 346th of 365, and A&T was barely better at 36.4%.

Neither offense punished that kind of defense. The Aggies shot 31.7% from three, 309th in Division I, and the Bobcats 30.9%, 327th. A&T also rarely tried, ranking 323rd in 3-point attempt rate (a style stat, not a grade). So the soft perimeter defense on both sides may matter less than it looks.

Ohio's cleaner path to points is inside. The Bobcats made 55.5% of their twos last season, 60th nationally, and that efficiency near the basket is the most reliable weapon either team brings into this game.

Possessions tilt toward Ohio

Ball security is where the gap between these programs shows most clearly. A&T turned it over on 18.5% of its possessions last season, 292nd. Ohio protected the ball far better, ranking 83rd in turnover rate.

The Aggies' defense didn't make up the difference. A&T forced turnovers on only 14.3% of opponent possessions, 338th, so Ohio should get plenty of clean trips. That leaves A&T needing to win possessions back on the glass, and there is an opening: Ohio ranked 286th in defensive rebound rate last season. A&T's rotation also measures 78.0 inches on average, weighted by minutes, compared with 76.9 for Ohio.

Both teams played at nearly identical tempos last season, around 69 possessions per 40 minutes, so pace shouldn't produce a major clash of styles.

A season opener in Athens

Everything above comes from last season, and both rosters have changed since. Ohio finished 15-17 and A&T 11-19. The adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Ohio at -5.4 in net efficiency, 222nd, and A&T at -10.2, 274th.

The MAC's coaches picked Ohio fifth in the preseason poll. Jeff Boals, who finished his seventh season in 2025-26, adds Kolton Mitchell, who committed to the Bobcats for this season. Ohio had no injuries listed as of Oct. 19. Monté Ross leads A&T, and Will Felton, who missed a full season with an injury in an earlier year, is on the Aggies' roster.

The game is listed for 1:00 PM ET, though A&T's schedule still shows the time as TBA.
