Norfolk State vs William & Mary prediction: William & Mary's trips to the line test Norfolk State's foul trouble

Last season the Tribe lived at the free-throw line and Norfolk State's defense sent opponents there more often than almost anyone, a pairing a rebuilt Williamsburg roster will try to repeat.

Quick take
  • Expect a fast, foul-heavy game in Williamsburg, with the Tribe pushing tempo and Norfolk State trying to steal possessions with turnovers and offensive rebounds.
  • William & Mary's interior scoring against a Spartans defense that ranked 346th in opponent free throw rate last season.
  • No spread or total is posted yet; the Tribe's pace last season, 7th nationally, points to a high possession count.

The whistle tilts toward Williamsburg

This in-state series has swung hard in recent years, from a 34-point Norfolk State rout to a three-point William & Mary escape last November. The clearest edge in last season's numbers is about who gets to the free-throw line and who sends opponents there.

William & Mary ranked 10th in Division I in free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) last season. Norfolk State's defense allowed one of the highest rates in the country, ranking 346th of 365. The Tribe also converted inside, making 59.0% of their twos, 16th nationally. The Spartans ranked 256th in opponent two-point percentage.

If that profile carries over, William & Mary's best path is straight at the rim. The goal would be to draw fouls early and force Robert Jones, in his 14th season at Norfolk State, into lineup decisions he would rather avoid.

A pace the Tribe dictate

Brian Earl's teams run. William & Mary played at 73.5 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 7th fastest in the country, and scored 83.1 points per game. Norfolk State played quickly too, ranking 98th in pace.

The cost of all that speed showed on the other end. The Tribe allowed 77.7 points per game, 287th nationally. They also ranked 232nd in defensive rebound percentage. A fast game with plenty of free throws should mean plenty of possessions, though nothing in the market has put a number on that yet.

Where Norfolk State steals possessions

The Spartans' formula last season was to win the possession battle. Norfolk State forced turnovers on 19.7% of opponent possessions, 49th nationally. They grabbed 33.8% of their own misses, which ranked 88th. That offensive rebounding aims straight at a William & Mary defensive glass that struggled.

Norfolk State also got to the line, ranking 21st in free throw rate. The catch is what happened once it got there. The Spartans made 69.3% of their free throws, 288th in the country, a weakness that matters in a series whose last meeting was decided by three points. They were also an inside-out team by necessity, ranking 351st in 3-point attempt rate.

Old numbers, new faces

Treat everything above as last season's baseline, not a forecast. William & Mary went 20-12 and finished 138th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). Norfolk State went 15-17 and finished 315th by that measure. But the Tribe announced a 12-newcomer roster in July, so last season's team profile is a weak guide for Earl's third season.

Norfolk State's offseason additions include Sacramento State transfer forward Brandon Gardner, guard Jahki Gupton, Miles Mitchell, and freshmen Jordan Skyers and Jamese Jordan. Neither program had reported injury or eligibility news as of late October.

The series history argues for caution. Norfolk State won 96-62 in 2023. William & Mary then took the next two, 84-73 at home in 2024 and 81-78 on the road last November. The teams have met in each of the last five seasons, and the tip time for this one is still to be announced.
