Brown vs Lehigh prediction: Eric Reveno's Brown opens its road era against defending champion Lehigh
A new Brown staff inherits a defense that forced turnovers and an offense that couldn't score, and Lehigh's careful, three-hunting attack is the first road test.
- Expect a grinding, half-court game: both teams played near 67 possessions per 40 minutes last season, and Lehigh brings the steadier offense home.
- Brown's ball pressure against Lehigh's handle: the Bears ranked 47th in forced turnover rate last season, Lehigh 252nd in turnover rate.
- No spread or total has posted yet. Last season's adjusted net ratings put the teams close: Brown 289th, Lehigh 296th.
A rebuild meets a champion
Brown starts over this fall. Mike Martin left for Michigan in July, and the school hired Eric Reveno, Stanford's associate head coach, to replace him. Reveno's first road game comes at Stabler Arena, against a Lehigh program that won the Patriot League last season and was picked second in this year's preseason poll.
The Mountain Hawks keep their coach, Brett Reed, and the league's preseason Player of the Year, Hank Alvey. Lehigh went 18-17 last season and reached the First Four, where Prairie View A&M beat it 67-55. This game sits in a run of three straight home dates that begins with Cornell on Nov. 5.
Brown went 9-18 and was picked seventh in the Ivy preseason poll. Its newcomer class is five freshmen plus Ray Cuevas, a transfer from Division III Bowdoin, so last season's numbers describe a system Reveno did not build.
Where Brown can steal possessions
Martin's last Brown team defended far better than it scored. Its raw defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions) ranked 62nd of 365, built on pressure: the Bears forced turnovers on 19.8% of opponent possessions, 47th nationally.
That pressure lines up with Lehigh's soft spot. The Mountain Hawks turned it over on 17.7% of possessions, 252nd in the country. They also rarely chased misses, ranking 350th in offensive rebound rate, which means Lehigh possessions tend to end on the first shot. If Brown's defensive identity survives the coaching change, live-ball turnovers are its clearest path to easy points.
Lehigh's shooting edge
Lehigh's offense shot the three well. It hit 35.6% from deep, 89th nationally, and its effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 53.1% ranked 116th.
Brown was the opposite. It made 31.8% of its threes, 302nd, and its offensive efficiency ranked 323rd. Lehigh's defense also kept opponents off the arc, allowing one of the lowest three-point attempt rates in the country, so Brown's freshmen may be pushed into contested twos.
Brown rarely got to the line either: its free throw rate ranked 347th, and it shot 68.3% once there. In a close game late, that is a real handicap on the road.
Why the gap may be narrow
Last season's adjusted ratings, which account for schedule strength, see these teams as near equals. Brown finished with an adjusted net efficiency of -11.5, Lehigh at -12.1. Lehigh's adjusted defense ranked 261st, well behind Brown's 159th.
The tempo will not separate them. Brown played at 67 possessions per 40 minutes and Lehigh at 66.7, so expect a lower-possession game where turnovers and a handful of threes carry outsized weight. No injury or eligibility issues turned up for either team, and no starters have been named; both are worth checking closer to tip.
Numbers that matter
| Brown forced turnover rate, last season | 19.8% | Ranked 47th nationally and targets a Lehigh offense that ranked 252nd in turnover rate. |
|---|---|---|
| Lehigh 3-point %, last season | 35.6% | Ranked 89th and gives the home team its most reliable source of points. |
| Brown offensive efficiency rank, last season | 323rd | The biggest problem Reveno inherits, with a roster adding five freshmen. |
| Lehigh offensive rebound rate, last season | 23.9% | Ranked 350th, so Lehigh rarely extends possessions with second chances. |
| Brown free throw rate rank, last season | 347th | Brown seldom reached the line, a concern in a tight road finish. |
