Morgan State vs Niagara prediction: Niagara's near-total rebuild faces Morgan State's foul-line pressure
Niagara brings back about a tenth of last season's minutes, and Morgan State's habit of living at the free-throw line will test the new group early.
- Morgan State, picked second in the MEAC, should try to push the pace and attack the rim against a Niagara roster still learning each other.
- Morgan State's foul-drawing against Niagara's defense, and whether Niagara's guards can avoid sending the Bears to the line.
- No line posted yet. Last season's pace gap, 70.5 possessions for Morgan State against 62.9 for Niagara, will shape the total.
A roster built from scratch
Greg Paulus enters his eighth season at Niagara with what amounts to a new team. Players on this season's roster accounted for just 10.2% of last season's minutes, so the 8-22 record from 2025-26 says little about who takes the floor in the Gallagher Center this time.
The lone returner of note is guard Trenton Walters, who averaged 7.2 points last season and hit 35.4% from three. Around him sits a stack of transfer guards. Tae Blackshear carried a 25.7% usage rate off the bench at Youngstown State, the most aggressive shot-taker in the group. Logan Woods was the most efficient, posting a 113.6 offensive rating (points produced per 100 possessions) at Wright State.
The gone include Vice Zanki, who shot 38.5% from three last season, and leading scorer Justin Page. Niagara also moves to the Metro this season after going 5-15 in the MAAC.
Morgan State lives at the line
The clearest edge in last season's numbers belongs to the Bears. Their free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) was 41.8%, 30th in Division I. Niagara's own free throw rate was 26.1%, 355th, so last year's Purple Eagles rarely made up ground at the stripe.
The whistle cut the other way too. Morgan State's defense allowed an opponent free throw rate of 50.0%, 362nd of 365. A Niagara team that attacks the paint could flip the foul count, but nothing in last season's profile suggests that is its style.
Morgan State needed those free throws. Its effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) was 48.3%, 326th, dragged down by 47.6% shooting inside the arc.
A tempo tug-of-war
Last season these programs played at opposite ends of the speed dial. Morgan State averaged 70.5 possessions per 40 minutes, 56th nationally. Niagara averaged 62.9, 359th, and scored 63.9 points a game.
With Niagara's roster turned over, that slow pace may not carry forward, and a guard-heavy transfer class could play faster. Whichever team sets the tempo will steer the scoring range once a total is posted.
The Bears' reloaded backcourt
Kevin Broadus's team went 14-16 last season and ended with a 75-70 overtime loss to No. 7 Delaware State in the MEAC quarterfinals as the No. 2 seed. Morgan State lost All-MEAC guard Elijah Davis, along with guards Rob Lawson and Walter Peggs Jr., and added transfers Keith Richard and Trey Pettigrew in May.
League coaches still like the Bears. They were picked second in the MEAC preseason poll with one first-place vote, behind favorite Howard. Morgan State also won last season's meeting, 81-73 at home on Dec. 13, 2025.
The Bears' defense had one real strength last season: opponents shot 31.5% from three, 49th nationally. Niagara's new guards will test it.
Morgan State had no injuries listed as of Oct. 19, and none were listed for Niagara.
Key players
- Trenton Walters (Niagara): The top returner averaged 7.2 points and shot 35.4% from three last season.
- Tae Blackshear (Niagara): Used 25.7% of possessions off the bench at Youngstown State last season, the highest usage among Niagara's newcomers.

Numbers that matter
| Niagara returning minutes | 10.2% | Almost none of last season's 8-22 team is back, so last season's numbers are a weak guide. |
|---|---|---|
| Morgan State free throw rate, last season | 41.8% | Ranked 30th nationally, the Bears' most reliable source of points. |
| Morgan State opponent free throw rate, last season | 50.0% | Ranked 362nd of 365, so the Bears fouled even more often than they drew fouls. |
| Niagara pace, last season | 62.9 | Ranked 359th, far slower than Morgan State's 70.5. |
