Manhattan vs Maine prediction: Manhattan's rebuilt backcourt tests Maine's stingy perimeter defense in Orono
With almost nobody back from last season, Manhattan's transfers make their debut against a Maine defense that smothered shooters even as its own offense sputtered.
- Expect a slow, grinding game in which Maine's defense keeps it close and Manhattan's new guards decide whether the Jaspers can pull away.
- Colgate transfer Ben Tweedy's shooting against a Maine defense that held opponents to 29.6% from three last season.
- No spread or total had posted in our feed; Maine's 62.5 points per game last season, 363rd nationally, is the number to weigh.
A Manhattan roster built from scratch
Manhattan arrives in Orono as close to a brand-new team as Division I gets. Players on this season's roster accounted for just 7.4% of last season's minutes, so the Jaspers' 12-20 record from 2025-26 says little about who takes the floor on Sunday.
The biggest hole is Jaden Winston, who scored 15.3 points a game and started every game he played. In his place, John Gallagher, in his third season, leans on transfers. Ben Tweedy is the headliner: he started all 33 games at Colgate last season and shot 38.5% from three. Josiah Sabino comes from Niagara with a 90.9% free throw mark, which fits a program that ranked third nationally at the line last season.
The only returner with real minutes is guard Quron Elliott, a reserve who averaged 3.5 points. Read Manhattan's team numbers from last season as history, not a forecast.
Maine guards the arc, then stalls
Maine's identity last season was a split personality. The defense held opponents to 29.6% from three, sixth-best in the country, and forced turnovers at a 19.9% rate, 42nd nationally.
The offense undid that work. Maine scored 96.1 points per 100 possessions, 361st of 365, and shot 64.1% from the free throw line, 364th. That combination produced an 8-24 season for Chris Markwood, now in his fifth year. Maine's returning-minutes data isn't available, so how much of either side carries over is an open question.
That perimeter defense is the direct test for Tweedy. A shooter who made his name at Colgate now faces a scheme that made opponents miss from deep all of last season.
Loose balls and empty possessions
Both teams struggled to finish possessions last season. Maine turned the ball over on 19.1% of its trips, 322nd nationally, and Manhattan's steal rate ranked 62nd, though nearly all of those defenders are gone.
The glass offers a strange standoff. Manhattan's defensive rebounding ranked 360th, normally an open invitation. But Maine grabbed only 19.8% of its own misses, 364th, so the Black Bears rarely exploited a weakness like that. Whichever team finds second chances first could own the margin.
A new event and a quick turnaround
This is part of the inaugural America East–Metro Challenge and the first meeting between the programs. Maine plays Sacred Heart on Thursday, Nov. 5, then returns home three days later, so the Black Bears will have one game of film behind them.
Maine also prefers a crawl. Its pace of 65.1 possessions per 40 minutes ranked 301st last season, and a home team that defends the arc and slows the game tends to keep scores low.
What to watch - Tweedy's early looks from three against Maine's closeouts - Maine's turnovers against an unfamiliar Manhattan press or trap - Free throws late: Manhattan's shooters against Maine's struggles at the line
Key players
- Ben Tweedy (Manhattan): Started all 33 games at Colgate last season and shot 38.5% from three on 109 attempts.
- Josiah Sabino (Manhattan): Averaged 7.1 points and 4.6 rebounds at Niagara last season while making 90.9% of his free throws.
- Quron Elliott (Manhattan): Played 11.6 minutes a game off the bench last season and averaged 3.5 points.
Numbers that matter
| Manhattan returning minutes | 7.4% | Almost none of last season's 12-20 team is back, so Manhattan's prior numbers are a weak guide. |
|---|---|---|
| Maine opponent 3-point % | 29.6% | Sixth nationally last season, the defensive strength Manhattan's new shooters must solve. |
| Maine offensive efficiency | 96.1 | Points per 100 possessions last season, 361st of 365, the reason a strong defense still went 8-24. |
| Maine free throw % | 64.1% | Ranked 364th last season, a liability if Sunday's game is close late. |
