Fairfield vs Bryant prediction: Fairfield hunts extra possessions against a Bryant team that gave them away
The inaugural America East-Metro Challenge sends a reshuffled Fairfield roster to Smithfield, where last season's numbers say the ball-security gap is the widest edge on the floor.
- Expect a slow, grinding game decided by possessions: Fairfield protected the ball and crashed the glass last season, while Bryant gave it away.
- Watch Qadir Martin and Declan Wucherpfennig on the offensive glass against a Bryant defense that ranked 219th in defensive rebounding last season.
- No spread or total has been posted yet; last season's adjusted net efficiency had Fairfield 248th and Bryant 352nd of 365.
The possession battle
Two Northeast leagues have never staged a basketball challenge against each other before, and the first one brings Fairfield to the Chace Athletic Center on Sunday, Nov. 8. Tip time is still to be set by Bryant. The clearest gap between these teams last season had little to do with shooting. It was about who kept the ball and who got it back.
Bryant turned it over on 20.1% of its possessions in 2025-26, which ranked 348th of 365 in Division I. Fairfield coughed it up on 15.1%, good for 63rd. Stack Fairfield's offensive glass on top of that: the Stags grabbed 36.1% of their own misses (33rd nationally), while Bryant's defense ranked 219th at clearing its own boards.
Those are last season's numbers, and both rosters have changed. Still, a Bryant team that shoots poorly can't afford to hand over empty trips, and Fairfield was built last year to collect them.
Who Fairfield lost and found
Chris Casey, in his third season, is rebuilding on the fly. Fairfield returns 50.2% of last season's minutes and only 42.8% of its points. The biggest hole belongs to Braden Sparks, who scored 17.2 points per game and made 96 threes. Brandon Benjamin, the Stags' best rebounder at 10.4 per game, left for Boston College.
The glass now runs through Declan Wucherpfennig, a 34-game starter who averaged 8.5 rebounds last season. He was also Fairfield's most efficient returner, with an offensive rating of 122.6 (points produced per 100 possessions used). Mercyhurst transfer Qadir Martin steps into Benjamin's role after blocking 2.4 shots a game. He posted an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 58.9.
What Fairfield lacks is a proven perimeter scorer. Tony Williams, the top returning shooter, made 39 threes but hit just 32% of them. The Stags lost a 79-62 exhibition to Fordham on Oct. 24.
Bryant's three-point habit
Jamion Christian's Bryant team, the one that went 9-22 last season, lived behind the arc without living well there. The Bulldogs took 47.8% of their shots from three, the 27th-highest share in the country. They made only 30.4% of them, which ranked 340th.
Fairfield's defense allowed a 35.7% opponent three-point attempt rate last season, 302nd of 365, so the Stags did not push teams off the line. That matters more here than usual. Bryant is the bigger team, averaging 79.1 inches when weighted by minutes against Fairfield's 77.1. Its block rate of 11.4% ranked 73rd, and Fairfield made just 48.4% of its twos (326th). Bryant's size gives it a reason to defend the paint and a path to points inside if it stops settling.
A slow Sunday in Smithfield
Neither team pushed the pace last season. Bryant averaged 64.6 possessions per 40 minutes, 319th nationally, and Fairfield sat near the middle. Fewer possessions shrink the margin for a team that turns it over, but they also limit how many second chances Fairfield can stack.
Bryant has reasons for optimism. America East coaches picked the Bulldogs fifth, and senior forward Keegan Harvey made the preseason all-conference team. Last season's opponent-adjusted ratings still put Fairfield well ahead, at 248th to Bryant's 352nd. The challenge format gives a non-conference date some league pride, and Bryant gets it on its own floor.
