Albion vs Purdue Fort Wayne prediction: Purdue Fort Wayne's new faces get a first look against Division III Albion

With five transfers and four freshmen on the roster, the Mastodons' opener says more about who earns minutes than about the final score.

Quick take
  • Purdue Fort Wayne should control a Division III visitor at Memorial Coliseum. The real interest is how Jon Coffman spreads minutes across a reshaped roster.
  • Watch PFW's pressure. Last season the Mastodons forced turnovers on 19.9% of opponent possessions, 45th of 365.
  • No spread or total has been posted. PFW played at 69.5 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 89th nationally, a pace on the faster side of Division I.

A roster still being sorted

Purdue Fort Wayne went 17-15 last season, and its roster has changed a lot since then. Five transfers have arrived: Ashton Williamson from FIU, Anthony Isaac Jr. from Manhattan, DeAndre Lewis from East Mississippi CC, Tamaje Izuagbe from Oklahoma Wesleyan and Edir Ortiz from Seton Hill. Four true freshmen have joined too: Carl Thompson III, Jaiden Arnold, Luke Balanis and Adam Walker.

That much turnover makes last season's team numbers a loose guide. Jon Coffman, entering his 13th season, gets a home date against Albion, a Division III program from the MIAA, to see which combinations hold up. Albion's schedule lists the game for Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m.

What last season's identity was

If the newcomers keep any of last year's habits, ball pressure is the one to look for. PFW posted a steal rate of 12.3%, 30th of 365. It also protected the ball: its turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) was 14.3%, also 30th.

The weaknesses were just as clear. The Mastodons grabbed 23.6% of their own misses, 353rd nationally. Opponents posted a 54.6% effective field goal percentage against them (a measure that counts threes 1.5 times), which ranked 334th. Last season's final adjusted net rating was -8.5 points per 100 possessions after adjusting for opponents, 258th. A Division III opponent won't test those problems the way Horizon League play will.

The Purdue tune-up

PFW's latest game was an Oct. 22 exhibition loss to Purdue at home. The final score is listed as both 92-62 and 93-62. Purdue started slowly, and the Mastodons made the Boilermakers work for the win. Against Albion, the goal is cleaner execution and a long look at the transfers in real minutes before the schedule gets harder.
