Oklahoma City Thunder vs Houston Rockets prediction: Thunder's injury pile-up arrives in Houston against a tired Rockets team
Oklahoma City has lost Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Cason Wallace in a week, while Houston plays the second night of a back-to-back with its own backs and bodies in question.
| Spread | Houston Rockets -2.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 219.5 |
- Expect a slow, grinding game: a Thunder offense stripped of its second and third options leans on Gilgeous-Alexander and a defense that still ranks 5th.
- Watch Shai Gilgeous-Alexander attack a Houston interior allowing 58.6% on twos, 26th in the league, with Alperen Sengun's back in question.
- Houston -3.5 and 218.5 haven't budged; the Thunder have gone under in four of five games while scoring 108.2 points a night.
A champion-level roster, in pieces
Oklahoma City won 64 games last season and finished 1st in net efficiency. The team that takes the floor in Houston on Saturday night looks nothing like it.
Jalen Williams had surgery Wednesday on a fractured left fibula and reconstructed ankle ligaments, and Cason Wallace had surgery Friday on a torn left labrum. Both will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season. Chet Holmgren underwent a biological treatment Friday for a small patellar tendon tear and will miss at least 8 to 10 weeks. Alex Caruso (right ankle sprain), Nikola Topic (back) and Thomas Sorber (knee) were listed out on the league report earlier this week, though some listings since show them day-to-day, so their status is unsettled. Ajay Mitchell was questionable for the Oct. 28 game at Dallas with a right ankle sprain, and nothing newer has surfaced.
The numbers already show the strain. The Thunder rank 23rd in offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions) at 106.1, and 28th in effective field goal percentage, which counts threes 1.5 times. Their last outing was a 120-96 loss at Dallas, in which they scored just 96. The defense is the part still standing, allowing 102.5 per 100 possessions, 5th in the league. Everything else runs through Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who averaged 31.1 points last season.
Houston's health and calendar
The Rockets have the deeper roster and the worse schedule. They lost 116-111 at Dallas on Friday in NBA Cup group play, their first loss of the season, and now play the second night of a back-to-back.
Alperen Sengun (back soreness) and Reed Sheppard (back) both sat Friday and are listed day-to-day. Marcus Smart (left forearm) is a game-time decision, and Steven Adams (right calf) remains out; Ime Udoka said Oct. 26 that Adams could miss "a week or two." Without Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr. and Clint Capela take on bigger roles.
Even with the bumps, Houston's offense ranks 2nd at 118.2 points per 100 possessions. Kevin Durant, facing the franchise he started with, hit 41.3% of his threes last season and gives the Rockets a shot-maker the Thunder can't match beyond their star.
Where the shots will come from
Oklahoma City's perimeter shooting is a problem without an obvious fix. The Thunder are making 30.9% of their threes, 25th in the league, and Isaiah Joe now plays in Detroit. Houston's defense holds opponents to 30.1% from deep, 3rd-best in the league.
Jared McCain is the shooter to watch. He hit 38.5% from three for Philadelphia last season, and he started in Wallace's place Monday and scored 18.
The real opening is inside. Opponents are making 58.6% of their twos against Houston, 26th in the league, and the Rockets' rim protection is thinner still with Adams out. Gilgeous-Alexander lives in that space. At the other end, the Thunder lead the league in block rate, but Holmgren was the anchor of that number and he is gone.
The glass without big men
Houston grabs 33.1% of its own misses (offensive rebound rate), 2nd in the league, and Oklahoma City's defensive rebounding ranks 17th. That gap widens with Holmgren off the floor, and it matters most for a Thunder team that can't afford to give away second chances while scoring this little.
Houston's own frontcourt is depleted too, with Adams out and Sengun day-to-day. If Sengun plays, the Rockets have the size edge. If he sits, the rebounding fight gets closer than the season numbers suggest.
What the market says
Houston is a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 218.5, and neither number has moved since the line first appeared Saturday morning. That suggests the market had priced in the Thunder's injuries and Houston's back-to-back before Saturday's slate.
The totals trends point in opposite directions. Oklahoma City has gone under in four of five games, while Houston has gone over in five of six. The series offers no clear guide either: the Thunder won 111-91 in Houston last January, and the Rockets won in Oklahoma City in February.
