Philadelphia 76ers vs Charlotte Hornets prediction: Charlotte's frozen offense runs into Philadelphia's suffocating defense
Both teams are on the second night of a back-to-back, the Hornets can't make a shot, and the 76ers' lineup hinges on Jaylen Brown's knee and two stars' rest.
| Spread | Philadelphia 76ers -1.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 211.5 |
- Expect a slow grind: Charlotte plays at the league's slowest pace, and Philadelphia's defense ranks 2nd in efficiency.
- Watch Charlotte's three-point volume against a 76ers defense holding opponents to 31.4% from deep.
- Philadelphia is a 1.5-point road favorite and the 215.5 total hasn't moved; every Hornets game this season has gone under (0-6).
A shooting slump with no exit
Charlotte has had the worst offense in basketball through six games. The Hornets score 97.9 points per 100 possessions, last in the league. Their effective field goal percentage, which counts threes 1.5 times, also ranks last.
The damage comes from beyond the arc. No team takes threes more often, with 50.7% of their shots coming from deep. They make just 28.7% of them, 29th in the league.
The missing pieces explain part of it. Kon Knueppel, who shot 42.5% from three last season, is out with a hamstring injury and isn't expected back until Nov. 2. Coby White (calf) is also out, and as of Oct. 26 coach Charles Lee had given no timeline. Grant Williams (hamstring) shows up as out on some injury listings and day-to-day on others. Dennis Schröder was upgraded to probable for Friday's game with a foot injury, but nothing has surfaced on his status for Saturday. The result has been 89 points at Detroit and 79 at Washington on Friday night.
Now the Hornets face a 76ers defense that allows 100.8 points per 100 possessions, 2nd in the league. If Charlotte keeps firing at this volume, Philadelphia's perimeter defense decides how ugly this gets.
Philadelphia's lineup puzzle
The 76ers rebuilt around Tyrese Maxey, who averaged 28.3 points last season, and two marquee arrivals. Jaylen Brown came over in an offseason trade after averaging 28.7 points for Boston, and LeBron James joined from the Lakers.
Brown sat out Friday's game against the Knicks with left knee soreness that showed up after the Indiana game. "He wasn't able to go through shootaround today and was ruled out," Nick Nurse said Friday. His Saturday status is unsettled. Some injury listings have him day-to-day while others have him out, and no shootaround update had surfaced.
Rest is the bigger unknown. James and Joel Embiid sat opposite halves of the team's first back-to-back, and both played Friday. The team hasn't said whether either one sits on this second night. Brown's knee and a rest day could leave Philadelphia without most of its starting five.
The depth has held up so far. The 76ers beat the Knicks 98-93 on Friday as underdogs, with Maxey, James and Anfernee Simons all scoring 20-plus and James hitting two clutch shots in the final 70 seconds. Dean Wade was expected to start in Brown's place. Dominick Barlow (back) remains out.
The extra-possession battle
Philadelphia guards the ball as well as anyone. Its turnover rate of 13.0 per 100 possessions ranks 2nd in the league. Charlotte gives it away 18.8 times per 100, 29th. In a game where shots will be scarce, that gap hands the 76ers extra looks.
The Hornets win some of it back on the glass. They grab 32.0% of their own misses, 4th in the league, and Philadelphia ranks just 21st in defensive rebounding. At the other end, the 76ers rank last in offensive rebound rate against a Charlotte team that ranks 2nd on the defensive glass. Philadelphia will get one shot per trip and little more.
Why the total sits so low
Philadelphia is a 1.5-point favorite and the total is 215.5. Neither number has moved since the line first appeared Saturday morning.
The unders tell the story. Charlotte is 0-6 to the under this season and Philadelphia is 1-5. The Hornets play the slowest pace in the league, and the 76ers' offense ranks 26th in efficiency. Both teams are 3-3 against the spread.
Last season's numbers offer little guidance. Charlotte ranked 7th in offensive efficiency in 2025-26, but LaMelo Ball, Miles Bridges and Collin Sexton are gone, and Naz Reid, Royce O'Neale and Schröder have arrived. The teams split last season's two games in Charlotte: the Hornets won 130-93 in January, and the 76ers won 118-114 in March.
