Portland Trail Blazers vs Utah Jazz prediction: Blazers' top-ranked offense tests its depth without Ja Morant in Utah
Portland has to find a new engine after Morant's hamstring strain, but a Jazz team missing two starting bigs may not be the opponent to punish it.
| Spread | Portland Trail Blazers -6.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 233 |
- Portland's shooting should travel against a thin Jazz defense, but without Morant the Blazers lean harder on Avdija, Holiday and a returning Lillard.
- Watch Portland's three-point volume against Utah's perimeter defense: the Blazers rank 2nd in attempt rate, and opponents hit 37.9% from deep against Utah.
- Portland is favored by 6.5 with a 233 total, and the Blazers swept all four meetings last season.
Life after Morant begins now
Four games into the Ja Morant era, Portland already has to play without him. Imaging after Thursday's 124-103 loss in Memphis showed a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, and Morant will be re-evaluated in four weeks. Saturday is the first game this season the Blazers start without him, and it opens a four-game road trip.
The Blazers are also without Shaedon Sharpe, who tore his meniscus and is out until around March. That puts the creation load back on Deni Avdija, who averaged 24.2 points and 6.7 assists last season, and on Jrue Holiday, who shot 37.8% from three. Damian Lillard, back after missing last season with an Achilles injury, has played in all four games.
The early returns on this group are loud. Portland ranks 1st in offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions) at 118.5, and 2nd in effective field goal percentage (which counts threes 1.5 times) at 57.2%. Four games is a small sample, and last season's Portland offense ranked 22nd, so how much of that survives without Morant is the real question.
Utah's frontcourt is thinning out
The Jazz built their preseason starting five around size, and two of those bigs are gone. Jaren Jackson Jr. tore his right MCL and is expected to miss six to eight weeks; Jusuf Nurkic is out with a partial plantar-plate tear in his right foot. Lauri Markkanen sat out Wednesday's overtime loss to San Antonio with a right wrist sprain and is questionable today. The Jazz haven't said more since the league report.
That matters because Utah's defense already ranks 26th in efficiency, allowing 115.3 points per 100 possessions. Its perimeter is the soft spot: opponents are shooting 37.9% from three, 25th in the league. Portland takes threes on 50.1% of its shots, 2nd most in the NBA. Kyle Filipowski, who averaged 7.2 rebounds last season, and Brice Sensabaugh are the names Utah leans on to fill the gaps.
Where the Jazz can hang around
Utah's best defensive trait is finishing possessions. The Jazz rank 5th in defensive rebound percentage at 77.2%, which limits second chances for a Portland team that ranks 11th on the offensive glass.
The Jazz also turn the ball over a lot, ranking 24th in turnover rate, but Portland is not built to punish that. The Blazers rank 26th in forced turnover rate, so Utah's sloppiness may cost less than usual. And if this one is close late, Portland's 69.6% free throw shooting, 29th in the league, gives a trailing Jazz team a reason to keep fouling. Keyonte George, an 89.2% free throw shooter last season, is Utah's best bet to close.
The line and the history
Portland is favored by 6.5 on the road, with the total at 233. Robert Williams III, listed questionable as the Blazers manage soreness in his left knee, is the main Portland variable still open.
Portland won all four meetings last season, including a 136-134 escape in Salt Lake City and a 137-117 rout at home. Utah has lost three straight and is 1-4 against the spread, though it covered as a 13.5-point underdog against the Spurs in its last outing. The Blazers are 2-2 against the spread, failing to cover as a favorite against both Sacramento and Memphis.
