Atlanta Hawks vs New Orleans Pelicans prediction: Pelicans' paint attack aims at Atlanta's open middle

New Orleans scores more inside than anyone, Atlanta struggles to stop it, and the Hawks can answer in kind against a Pelicans frontcourt missing Yves Missi.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 6:00 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Expect a fast, paint-heavy game where neither defense protects the rim, and Atlanta's cleaner ball security is the likeliest separator.
  • Pelicans drivers against Onyeka Okongwu and a thin Hawks frontcourt missing Henri Veesaar and Mouhamed Gueye.
  • Hawks -4.5 with a 240.5 total, both unchanged since our feed first saw the game. New Orleans has gone over in four of five games.

Nobody guards the paint

The Pelicans score more in the paint than any team in the league, and the Hawks protect the rim worse than almost anyone. Atlanta isn't much safer at the other end, which explains a total north of 240. Saturday in New Orleans shapes up as a layup line with a point spread attached.

New Orleans leads the NBA with 62.0 points in the paint per game. Atlanta's interior is the soft spot in an otherwise respectable defense. Opponents shoot 58.5% on twos against the Hawks, and Atlanta blocks shots at the 29th-ranked rate. Veesaar is out for the season with a torn ACL and Gueye is recovering from foot surgery, so Atlanta has little size to throw at the problem beyond Okongwu and Jock Landale. Landale is available despite a broken nose.

The traffic runs both ways. Atlanta scores 55.0 paint points per game, 2nd in the league. New Orleans allows opponents 60.5% on twos, which ranks 29th. Missi remains out with a bone bruise in his left knee, and DeAndre Jordan has been starting at center in his place. Okongwu, who put up 29 points and 12 rebounds against Cleveland on Thursday, should find room to work.

The shots New Orleans skips

No team takes threes less often than the Pelicans, who launch them on 34.7% of their shots. They make just 30.1% of those, and Atlanta's perimeter defense holds opponents to 31.2% from deep, 6th in the league. So expect New Orleans to keep driving.

That path leads to the line. The Pelicans' free throw rate (free throw attempts per shot) ranks 4th, while Atlanta sends opponents to the stripe at a middling clip. The Hawks rarely collect free points themselves, and they make only 72.7% of their foul shots, 27th in the league. In a close fourth quarter, that gap matters.

Possessions tilt toward Atlanta

The Hawks protect the ball as well as almost anyone. Their turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) of 13.1 ranks 3rd, and they force giveaways at the 5th-best rate. New Orleans gives it away 16.1 times per 100 possessions.

The Pelicans have two counters. They lead the league in steal rate, so Atlanta's passing game will face active hands. They also finish possessions well, ranking 6th in defensive rebound rate. The Hawks' ball movement is their engine: they assist on 73.6% of made baskets, the top rate in the NBA.

New coach, reshuffled backcourt

Jamahl Mosley earned his first win as Pelicans coach on Thursday, a 132-120 win over Sacramento. Jeremiah Fears ran the offense with 22 points and a career-high 13 assists, and he keeps the keys Saturday because Jordan Poole has been ruled out with a left ankle sprain. Dejounte Murray missed Thursday for the birth of his son, but he is off the injury report and expected back. Herbert Jones and Bennedict Mathurin could absorb more of Poole's minutes. Mathurin averaged 17.6 points for Indiana last season.

Atlanta added two Thunder wings over the summer. Aaron Wiggins scored 20 off the bench against Cleveland, and Luguentz Dort gives the Hawks another physical perimeter defender. That win snapped a three-game skid, and Saturday opens a three-game road trip.

Where the market sits

Atlanta is a 4.5-point road favorite, and the total sits at 240.5. Neither number has moved since our feed first recorded the game Saturday morning.

The total has a tailwind. The Pelicans play at the 2nd-fastest pace in the league, and Atlanta has gone over in four of six games. The series history leans one way: Atlanta has won the last four meetings, including a 115-98 win in New Orleans last season.
