Cleveland Cavaliers vs Milwaukee Bucks prediction: Harden and Mitchell head for the line against foul-prone Bucks
Milwaukee's post-Giannis defense fouls, forces almost nothing and gives up the rim, which is exactly where Cleveland's guards make their living.
| Spread | Cleveland Cavaliers -9 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 235.5 |
- Expect a fast game in which Cleveland's guards draw fouls and attack a soft interior while Milwaukee chases points on the offensive glass.
- Harden and Mitchell against a Bucks defense ranked 27th in opponent free throw rate.
- Cleveland is an 8.5-point favorite, unchanged since our feed first saw it, despite covering just once in five games this season.
The whistle decides the margin
Milwaukee spent the offseason closing the Giannis Antetokounmpo era, and five games in, the cost is showing up on defense. The Bucks are 1-4 under first-year coach Taylor Jenkins, and Saturday's visitor brings the backcourt best built to exploit what they give away.
The cleanest edge sits at the foul line. Free throw rate measures free throw attempts per field goal try, and Milwaukee's opponents post a 32.3% mark, 27th in the league. Cleveland draws them at 31.4%, which ranks 9th. James Harden fits that profile neatly: he shot 88.4% from the line for the Clippers last season.
The Bucks don't clean up mistakes at the rim, either. Their block rate of 7.7% ranks 28th. And Donovan Mitchell, who averaged 27.9 points last season, faces a defense that rarely pries the ball loose. Milwaukee forces turnovers on 12.4% of possessions, 29th in the league. A team that neither steals nor blocks nor stays out of foul trouble leaves Cleveland's guards with clean, repeatable looks.
Milwaukee's rebuild, five games in
The roster barely resembles last season's. Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis are now in Miami, and the return brought Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kel'el Ware north. Herro averaged 20.5 points for the Heat last season and has stepped straight into the lead role he was acquired for.
The results have been rough. Milwaukee's net efficiency (points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions) sits at -10.2, 26th in the league. The low point came Oct. 28, a 132-100 home loss to Houston in which Kyle Kuzma, Myles Turner and Ryan Rollins combined to shoot 6 of 27. Jenkins said afterward he didn't have the team prepared.
Availability is murky. Kuzma, Turner and Gary Trent Jr. were described as game-time decisions with no injury given, yet the Bucks' Oct. 31 injury report listed no injured players. Treat their status as unsettled until warmups. Losing Turner would strip the one proven shot blocker from a defense already short on them.
Fast pace, open paint
Both teams push. Milwaukee ranks 4th in pace and Cleveland 6th, so expect plenty of possessions.
Cleveland has its own soft spot. The Cavaliers allow 53.6 points in the paint per game, 27th in the league, and Milwaukee crashes the glass hard with an offensive rebound rate of 30.5%, 6th. Ware, who pulled down 9.0 rebounds a game for Miami last season, gives the Bucks a second-chance weapon against an Evan Mobley-led frontcourt.
Cleveland's depth is thinner than usual. Jaylon Tyson, who shot 44.6% from three last season, was ruled out Oct. 30 with a right ankle sprain. Rookie Meleek Thomas is questionable with a foot issue, Nae'Qwan Tomlin remains out indefinitely with a lower back stress reaction, and Khalifa Diop has also been sidelined. Newcomer Peyton Watson, acquired from Denver, should absorb more wing minutes.
The market holds firm
Books have not budged. Cleveland is an 8.5-point favorite and the total sits at 237.5, both unchanged since our feed first recorded the game Saturday morning.
The Cavaliers have been a poor bet so far, going 1-4 against the spread and losing both road games. Milwaukee's games have gone over the total in four of five, a product of its pace and a defense that keeps opponents scoring. Cleveland took the season series 3-1 last season, though both rosters have changed enough that those games describe different teams.
