Quick take
  • Expect a fast Cleveland start; the question is whether a Minnesota team playing its second game in two nights can make the Cavs close.
  • Cleveland's paint attack against Minnesota's soft interior: the Wolves rank 25th in opponent 2-point percentage despite an elite overall defense.
  • Cleveland -3.5 and 232.5 haven't moved since our feed opened; all three Minnesota games have stayed under, and the Wolves are 3-0 against the spread.

Cleveland's halftime problem

No team scores more before halftime than Cleveland. The Cavaliers average 68.5 first-half points, 1st in the league, and they have led comfortably at the break in both games. What happens after has been the story. They took a 69-45 halftime lead in Philadelphia and lost 114-106. Two nights later they went up big on Brooklyn and barely held on, failing to cover as heavy favorites.

Kenny Atkinson didn't dress it up: "Part of this is we're not in elite condition right now, which is kind of normal." That is the hinge of this game. Cleveland fades late, and Minnesota is playing on the second night of a back-to-back after beating Toronto on Sunday. If the Cavs build another early cushion, the Wolves' legs and the Cavs' lungs decide whether it holds.

A defense nobody has solved

Minnesota is 3-0 with three blowouts, and the defense is the reason. The Wolves allow 93.8 points per 100 possessions, 2nd in the league, and opponents are shooting 23.6% from three against them. That number will not last, but the Wolves are also making 42.4% of their own threes, best in the league, so both ends are running hot.

The soft spot sits inside. Opponents are hitting 58.2% of their twos against Minnesota, 25th in the league. That suits a Cleveland frontcourt built around Evan Mobley, and the Cavs do their best work in the paint. Jarrett Allen's knee is the variable: he was questionable before the opener, and no status for Monday had surfaced. Khalifa Diop is out, so Mobley would slide to center if Allen sits.

Possessions Cleveland keeps giving away

Cleveland's sloppiness is the cleanest edge Minnesota has. The Cavs turn it over on 19.8% of possessions, 28th in the league. The Wolves also own the glass at both ends, grabbing 36.1% of their own misses (offensive rebound rate, 2nd), while Cleveland ranks 26th on the offensive boards at 22.6%. Extra possessions are how a tired team stays close.

Cleveland's counter is the foul line. The Cavs draw free throws at a 39.8% rate (free throw attempts per shot), 2nd in the league. Minnesota keeps opponents off the line well, but its own free throw shooting is 60.7%, dead last. In a tight finish that matters.

Edwards, Ball and the rotation

The Wolves look different. LaMelo Ball runs the offense alongside Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, newcomer Jonathan Kuminga and Rudy Gobert, with Julius Randle and Naz Reid gone and Donte DiVincenzo out after Achilles surgery. Edwards scored 26 points in just 27 minutes Sunday, and Ball played only 17 minutes because of foul trouble.

Cleveland pairs Donovan Mitchell with James Harden, who averaged 23.6 points for the Clippers last season, plus Peyton Watson from Denver. Last season's series split, with the Cavs winning 146-134 in Cleveland in January.

Schedule spot and the line

The situational case for Cleveland is strong: the Cavs have won 21 of their last 24 home games against teams on the second night of a back-to-back. The market agrees, holding Cleveland at -3.5 with a total of 232.5, both unchanged since our feed first recorded them Monday morning.

The records pull the other way. Minnesota is 3-0 against the spread with all three games going under, while Cleveland is 0-2 ATS. Tempo is the total's wild card: the Cavs play at a pace of 111.0 possessions, 2nd fastest, while Minnesota sits mid-pack.
