Wright State vs Toledo prediction: Kellen Pickett and a rebuilt Wright State attack Toledo's soft interior
Two preseason conference contenders, both starting over with mostly new rosters, collide in Toledo's home opener, and the paint should settle it.
- Expect an inside-out game: both teams rarely shot threes last season, and Toledo ranked 334th in opponent two-point percentage.
- Kellen Pickett, the Horizon's preseason Player of the Year, against Austin Parks, Toledo's preseason All-MAC center.
- No spread or total posted yet; last season's adjusted net ratings had Toledo 130th and Wright State 141st, nearly even.
Two favorites, two rebuilds
This is the rare November nonconference game between two teams expected to win their leagues. Wright State was picked first in the Horizon League preseason poll. Toledo was picked second in the MAC. Both programs also spent the offseason replacing most of the players who earned those expectations.
Wright State returns just 31.6% of last season's minutes from a team that went 23-12. TJ Burch left for Utah and Michael Cooper for California, and Clint Sargent added four true freshmen plus transfers C.J. O'Hara from Green Bay and Chadlyn Traylor from Charleston. Toledo, 19-15 last season, brings back 36.0% of its minutes. Tod Kowalczyk lost his backcourt engine: Sonny Wilson, who scored 16.9 points a game, went to South Florida, and Leroy Blyden Jr. went to Kansas.
That turnover makes last season's team numbers a rough guide at best. Adjusted net efficiency (points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had the two programs within 11 spots of each other at the end of last season. The returning big men are the surest thing either coach has.
